Student answer (Band 6.5)

Many people argue that rather than buying a number of cheap clothes, it is a good option to go for a few but high-end clothing items. I, completely agree with the notion and going to elaborate it in the upcoming paragraphs.

Sometimes, it is the demand of the situation where people have to purchase lots of different clothes to fulfill the requirement. To elaborate, if a person is working in the entertainment industry such as a stand up comedian, a local singer, actor or a dancer, he/she can wear a particular dress for once only. Therefore, they have to buy clothes and accessories for such events. So, instead of buying designer costumes, it is a better option to choose reasonable goods. For example, in many Indian TV dramas, due to low budget, all the clothes are bought from local markets at reasonable rates.

On the contrary, many people says, investing in top notch clothes is beneficial as one can use that particular cloth for many years that turned out to be cost effective and also save time in a long run. Further, designer and high quality clothing items serve as a part of reputation in higher society which means cost and quality of clothes decide the standard of individuals resulting in making people stand out in crowd. For example, all the celebrities around the world invests in high end products as per financial conditions.

In conclusion, whether it is the demand of some profession to buy plenty of lower quality clothes it is better to choose few but top quality outfits to serve in a long run and it also enhance the standard of people in a group.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. You have provided relevant arguments for both sides, acknowledging the counter-argument regarding professional requirements before supporting your main stance. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the point about 'reputation in higher society' is introduced but not fully explored in terms of its social implications. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting point is expanded with more depth or a more detailed illustration. The conclusion effectively summarizes your position, though it could be more distinct from the body paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'To elaborate,' 'On the contrary,' and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition between the discussion of Indian TV dramas and the counter-argument in the second paragraph is a bit abrupt. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and each paragraph has a central theme, which helps the overall readability of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'high-end,' 'cost-effective,' and 'top-notch.' There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'many people says' (should be 'say') and 'invests' (should be 'invest'). While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, the range is somewhat restricted, and some phrasing is repetitive. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and avoid repeating the same words (e.g., 'clothes' and 'reasonable') too frequently within the same paragraph.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('many people says', 'all the celebrities... invests') and minor punctuation or article errors. These errors do not impede communication, but they do prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. To improve, focus on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and ensuring consistent verb tense usage, especially when discussing general truths versus specific examples.
