Student answer (Band 6.5)

In this modern era, fashion industry is booming aggressively. Some people buy clothes at the higher cost in smaller quantity, while others prefer buying a variety of clothes for cheaper rate. I am partially agree with these phenomena which I will explain in the following paragraphs.

On the one side, buying an expensive clothes in a few pieces means buying big brands who sell a great quality material clothes. These clothes are not only made with a good fabric but also made with advanced technology. In USA for instance Well known company has created a denim with the Thermoadapt technology, which basically will make a person feel cold in hot weather and hot in cold weather, provides a great quality to own one pair of pant for all season. Moreover, these technologies are the innovation where it is worth spending on them considering the longer life of the clothes. Furthermore, expensive long lasting clothes will reduce the cycle of recycling the fabrics leads to less usage of natural resources. Fashion industry is heavily dependent on water and soil to run their business, as without raw materials like cotton and hemp, it is nearly impossible.

On the other hand, buying cheaper apparels in a big quantity provides employment. Fashion departments and big companies need people to work on every single stage from weaving a material to marketing and selling those units. Bigger demand means bigger supply and more job opportunities. However, these practices leads to ruin our natural sources at the fullest, our future generations will follow the trends and will take almost no care for the nature and earth.

In conclusion, I believe a balanced approach of buying expensive and cheaper clothes will be a great solution considering their advantages of saving natural resources and more recycling with following the fashion trends.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both sides of the argument and providing a clear personal position. The ideas are relevant, such as the environmental impact of fast fashion versus the economic benefits of mass production. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The argument regarding 'Thermoadapt technology' is a specific and well-supported example, but the discussion on employment is slightly less developed. The conclusion provides a balanced summary, though it could be more explicitly linked to the initial prompt. Overall, the position is consistent throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used effectively to transition between ideas, such as 'On the one side', 'Moreover', and 'On the other hand'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct arguments. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing of 'these phenomena' in the introduction is a bit vague. Nevertheless, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision. Phrases like 'booming aggressively', 'natural resources', and 'raw materials' are used effectively. There are some minor errors in collocation and word choice, such as 'buying an expensive clothes' (should be 'expensive clothing' or 'expensive items') and 'at the fullest' (should be 'to the fullest'). Despite these occasional inaccuracies, the vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication of complex ideas.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I am partially agree' (should be 'I partially agree'), 'leads to ruin' (should be 'leads to the ruin of' or 'ruins'), and 'with following the fashion trends' (should be 'while following'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede the reader's understanding of the main arguments. The student shows an attempt to use complex structures, but control over these is inconsistent, which is characteristic of the 6.0-6.5 band range.
