Student answer (Band 7.5)

In today's consumer driven society, people are often faced with the choice between purchasing a few high-quality garments or buying a large quantity of cheaper clothing. I strongly agree that investing in a limited number of expensive clothes is a more sensible and beneficial approach.

Firstly, high quality clothing tend to be far mor durable than cheaper alternatives. Expensive garments are usually made from superior materials and are crafted with greater attention of details, which ensures they last significantly longer. As a result, although the initial cost may be higher, they prove to be more cost-effective in the long run. For instance, a well made winter coast can last for several years, whereas a cheaper one may need to be replaced every season.

Secondly, buying fewer but better quality items promotes sustainability and reduces environmental harm. The fast fashion industry is one of the largest contributors to population, largely due to the mass production and disposal of low-cost clothing. By choosing durable pieces, consumers can minimize waste and lessen their environmental footprint. This is particularly important in an era where environmental conservation is becoming increasingly urgent.

Moreover, expensive clothes often offer better comfort and fit, which enhances confidence and overall appearance. High-end brands typically focus on design, tailoring, and fabric quality, ensuring that the wearer feels comfortable and looks presentable. In contrast, cheaper clothes may lose shape or colour after a few washes, reducing their usability and appeal.

Admittedly, purchasing expensive clothing may not be affordable for everyone, especially those with limited financial resources. However, even in such cases, prioritizing quality over quantity whenever possible is still a wiser decision.

In conclusion, while cheaper clothing may seem attractive in the short term, investing in a few high-quality items is more economical, environmentally friendly, and beneficial in terms of comfort and appearance.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response fully addresses all parts of the task. You have taken a clear position from the introduction and maintained it throughout the essay. Each paragraph introduces a distinct, relevant argument—durability, environmental impact, and personal comfort—which are well-supported with logical reasoning and examples. The ideas are extended sufficiently to meet the requirements of the task. The conclusion effectively summarizes your main points, reinforcing your stance. To reach a higher band, you could further develop the counter-argument in the penultimate paragraph by providing a more specific example of how one might manage the cost of high-quality items, such as through budgeting or seasonal sales.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, signaled by appropriate linking words such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion'. The use of cohesive devices is generally effective and natural. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct arguments. The relationship between ideas is clear, and the flow of the argument is smooth. There are no instances of mechanical or repetitive linking, and the referencing is accurate throughout the text. The structure is coherent and supports the reader's understanding of your position.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, including topic-specific terms like 'consumer-driven society', 'fast fashion industry', 'environmental footprint', and 'cost-effective'. The language is generally precise and natural. There are a few minor errors, such as 'population' instead of 'pollution' in the second paragraph, which is a significant word-choice error. However, this does not impede communication. You show an ability to use less common lexical items effectively. To improve, ensure you proofread for small slips in word form or collocation to ensure complete accuracy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most sentences are error-free, and your control of grammar is generally strong. There are a few minor slips, such as 'high quality clothing tend to be' (should be 'tends') and 'attention of details' (should be 'attention to detail'). Additionally, there is a typo in 'winter coast' (should be 'coat'). Despite these occasional errors, the meaning is always clear, and the grammatical control is sufficient to support a high band. The punctuation is generally accurate, aiding the readability of your arguments.
