Student answer (Band 6.5)
Essay
It is often argued that people should buy a few expensive clothes instead of purchasing a large number of cheaper ones. I agree with this view because expensive clothes are generally more durable and can provide better value in the long term.
Firstly, expensive clothes are usually made from better-quality materials. As a result, they tend to last longer and do not lose their shape or colour quickly. Although buying an expensive item may cost more initially, it can be used for several years. For example, a good-quality jacket may be expensive, but a person can wear it regularly for many winters without needing to replace it. In contrast, cheap clothes may need to be replaced frequently because they can become damaged after a few washes.
Secondly, buying fewer high-quality clothes can also reduce unnecessary spending. People who continuously buy cheap clothes may spend a large amount of money over time. Moreover, having too many clothes can create waste and contribute to environmental problems. Choosing durable clothing means that fewer items are thrown away, which can help reduce waste.
However, I also understand why some people prefer cheaper clothes. Not everyone has enough money to purchase expensive clothing, and cheaper options allow people to have different outfits for different occasions. Therefore, affordable clothes can be a practical choice for people with limited budgets.
In conclusion, although cheap clothes are more affordable and offer greater variety, I believe that buying a few good-quality and expensive clothes is a better choice because they last longer, provide better value and can reduce unnecessary waste.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response clearly addresses all parts of the task, presenting a well-developed position on whether it is better to buy a few expensive clothes rather than many cheaper ones. The student takes a clear stance in the introduction and maintains it throughout the essay. Main ideas are extended and supported with relevant explanations and examples, such as the discussion on durability, jacket longevity, and environmental waste. The counter-argument is also briefly acknowledged and addressed, which adds balance to the discussion. The overall treatment of the task is thorough and meets the requirements of a Band 7 response effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, starting with durability, moving to financial and environmental benefits, and briefly considering the opposing view before concluding. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Moreover', and 'In contrast' are used effectively to guide the reader through the argument. Paragraphing is used appropriately and supports the overall structure of the response. The referencing and logical flow between sentences are well-managed, aligning comfortably with a Band 7 descriptor.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating less common items such as 'durable', 'initially', 'environmental problems', and 'affordable'. Word choice is generally appropriate, and meaning is conveyed clearly throughout. While the lexical range is somewhat standard and does not heavily feature sophisticated or rare idiomatic phrases, it provides enough flexibility to discuss the topic precisely. Spelling and word formation are accurate, matching the criteria for a solid Band 6.5 or 7.0, with Band 6.5 reflecting the slightly repetitive use of basic adjectives like 'expensive' and 'cheap'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The writer demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing conditional structures and dependent clauses such as 'Although buying an expensive item may cost more initially, it can be used for several years.' Grammatical control is generally strong, with frequent error-free sentences throughout the text. Punctuation is used correctly, and occasional minor imperfections do not impede communication in any way. The grammatical range and accuracy are consistent and well-controlled, comfortably fitting into the Band 7 category.
