Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often considered that buying a few designer garments is a viable option, instead of purchasing several afforable clothes. I totally agree with this notion as clothes from renowned brands are durable and suits the personality better.

One of the primary reasons why people should shop less but expensive garments is that expensive clothes often provide with superior quality as well as long lasting articles. This is largely because they produce limited addition articles to build the customer's trust as well as to maintain brand's reputation. Gucci, Louis Vuitton, for example, are some of the famous brands that are expensive no doubt, however, they offer products that fits properly to an individuals preference and last for years without fadding or ripping. Therefore, it is evident that buying a few, but expensive clothes are benificial for individuals.

People who buy numerous pair of cheap clothes, they often suffer with issues such as, fadding the color, ripping soon, and does not suits their personality. Undoubtedly, initially they feel that they save a significant amount of money, but buying them frequently cost greater than buying one luxury piece of clothing. A clear example of this can be seen in individuals, who spend a substantial amount of financial resources on buying afforable clothes and ended up filling their closet, but actully not wearing it peoperly as they have cheaper quality as compare to branded clothes. Hence, people should consider quality instead quantity while shopping clothes.

To conclude, although people can buy numerous pairs of clothes under budget from ordinary shops, these are not long lasting, rather buying less but quality of clothes should be advantageous.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response clearly addresses both parts of the prompt, taking a strong and consistent position in favour of buying a few expensive clothes rather than many cheaper ones. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed. For example, in the second paragraph, the candidate explains why expensive garments offer better quality due to limited editions and brand reputation, supporting this with examples like Gucci and Louis Vuitton. However, some arguments lean slightly towards generalisation, and certain points could have been extended further to fully meet the higher band descriptors. Overall, the task is properly addressed throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a clear overall progression with a logical arrangement of ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with an introduction, two body paragraphs focusing on distinct aspects of the argument, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed to connect ideas, such as "One of the primary reasons", "Therefore", and "To conclude". However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical, as seen in the phrasing "People who buy numerous pair of cheap clothes, they often suffer...", which creates a slight grammatical redundancy that affects the seamless flow of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common lexical items such as "renowned brands", "durable", and "financial resources". However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice inaccuracies throughout the text, such as "afforable" instead of affordable, "addition" instead of edition, "fadding" instead of fading, and "benificial" instead of beneficial. While these errors do not severely impede communication, they prevent the lexical score from reaching higher bands where greater precision and spelling accuracy are required.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over clause structures through conditional and causal links like "This is largely because they produce..." and "...individuals, who spend a substantial amount... and ended up filling...". However, there are frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, such as "garments is a viable option, instead of purchasing" (incorrect punctuation and collocation), "provide with superior quality" (unnecessary preposition), and subject-verb agreement issues like "products that fits properly" and "clothes does not suits". Punctuation errors also occur, such as unnecessary comma splices.
