Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays the demand of luxury clothes items have been increased among the younger generation. On the other side, people believe that buying a lot of cheap clothes provide them a better choice to wear clothes in various occasion. In the essay, we will discuss about the both expensive and cheap clothes followed by my own opinion.

Firstly, the perks of buying an expensive clothes is that the quality and the fabric used is of best quality. For example, the brands like Gucci and Armani exchange used premium fabric that is easy to wash and have better fitting as well. In the end, the branded clothes will make you stand different as compared to other local brands that are produced within the country.

On the other hand, people preferred to buy normal or low quality clothes so that they can have wide variety of stocks that can be used in different festive seasons. For instance, India have lot of festivals such as Diwali, Holi and Dusshera and it will be difficult to buy new clothes in every festive period. Additionally, it will save some money that can be invested or can be used for emergency purpose.

To conclude, I believe buying few luxury brand clothes can be a good option for those people who can afford to buy the clothes again. However, it is not feasible that every individual can buy the expensive items as they will definitely be going for cheaper clothes than can save lot of money and give wider choice.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both sides of the argument regarding expensive and cheap clothes, and provides a clear personal position in the introduction and conclusion. The ideas are generally relevant, but some are slightly under-developed and rely on sweeping generalisations, such as the claim that India has lots of festivals making it difficult to buy new clothes. The explanation for why people buy cheaper clothes touches on practicality and financial savings, but the development lacks depth. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, placing it firmly at a Band 6.0 level according to the IELTS descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph structure, moving from an introduction to body paragraphs representing opposing views, and finishing with a conclusion. Transitional markers such as 'Firstly', 'On the other hand', and 'To conclude' are used to structure the text, although some cohesive devices feel slightly mechanical. Referencing is generally clear, though phrases like 'the demand of luxury clothes items have been increased' create minor stumbling blocks. Paragraphing is used appropriately, ensuring that each distinct idea is isolated, supporting a Band 6.0 score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with attempts at less common items such as 'luxury brand clothes', 'premium fabric', and 'emergency purpose'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors and awkward collocations throughout the text, such as 'luxury clothes items have been increased' instead of 'has increased', and 'stand different' instead of 'stand out'. Spelling is generally accurate, but word choice inaccuracies prevent the response from achieving a higher band. The lexical range is minimally sufficient to convey the intended meaning, matching the Band 6.0 descriptor.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar. However, there are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement and preposition use, such as 'the demand... have been increased', 'in various occasion' instead of 'on various occasions', and 'India have lot of festivals'. Additionally, sentence structures occasionally become awkward, like 'than can save lot of money'. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they persist throughout the response, which aligns well with the Band 6.0 criteria for grammar.
