Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is said that fewer branded garments should be purchased, instead of buying lots of inexpensive clothes. I completely disagree with this statement becuase buying cheaper clothes saves people's money and provide them with a variety to wear something new.

To commence, one of the seasons of buying lots of cheaper clothes is to save the some amount of people's income. When a pair of expensive clothes is bought, its price is more than people's expectation. Some middle class families can not afford this, and they can purchase lots of cheaper clothes in the price of a pair of branded clothes. As a result, it not only saves their money, but also make them financial stable. For example, in developing countries, many people do shopping from a clearance sale so that they can buy a bunch of clothes in less price. However, I think that every family can not afford to buy expensive clothes, so they should choose to purchase lots inexpensive clothes so that they can have enough money to spend on the rest of things, such as food and medicine.

Furthermore, lots of cheaper clothes give people different options to wear. When people wear fewer cloths regularly, they may feel bored and unhappy. Therefore, cheaper clothes give people an option to wear a different style every day. As a result, they look quite different, so they easily go to meetings, office, and outside with their family and friends. For example, in Canada, many citizens want to look something different from yesterday so they buy lots of cheaper clothes, as a result, they are not jugged in the office and society to wear a same thing again and again.

In conclusion, although todays style can be followed by wearing some expensive clothes, people can have a financially stability and various options to wear if they decide to buy lots of cheaper clothes.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response clearly addresses both parts of the prompt by taking a strong, consistent position that buying cheaper clothes is better. The writer supports their argument with two main ideas: financial savings for middle-class families and the variety offered by having more clothing options. The ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as shopping during clearance sales and cultural practices in Canada. However, there is a slight tendency to over-generalise, and some explanations are slightly repetitive. Overall, all parts of the task are addressed effectively, aligning well with the Band 7 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay presents a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. It is divided into an introduction, two distinct body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used adequately to connect ideas, such as "To commence", "Furthermore", and "In conclusion". Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each body paragraph focusing on a distinct main point. However, some cohesive phrases feel a bit formulaic or repetitive (e.g., "As a result"), preventing the response from reaching a higher band. Referencing and progression are generally clear, supporting an overall coherent structure that matches Band 6.5 to 7.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as "branded garments", "financial stability", and "clearance sale". However, there are some word-choice errors, such as "seasons" instead of "reasons" in the second paragraph, "in the price of" instead of "at the price of", and spelling issues like "becuase" and "jugged" (judged). While these lexical inaccuracies and spelling errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication, placing the response solidly in the Band 6 category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and conditional structures. There are several grammatical errors present throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ("every family can not afford") and prepositions ("do shopping from a clearance sale", "buy a bunch of clothes in less price"). Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while these errors persist, they rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the argument without significant difficulty. This performance fits the Band 6 descriptors.
