Student answer (Band 6.0)

Clothes are the first impression they provide of any person. Wearing expensive but same clothes everyday tells a different story of an individual while styling cheap clothes with variety of clothes tells another. It is assumed that it is better to have less clothes but they should only be expensive. I completely disagree with this statement and reasons to this disbelief is further elaborated in following paragraphs.

First and foremost, expensive clothes looks much better than cheap clothes when worn right but to every other occassion they cannot be used to stand out. More variety of clothes enhances the appeal of a person and makes them fit into every place they go to. Moreover, wearing new or different clothes uplifts confidence. For example, going out on parties with new clothes allow the person to feel fresh rather than wearing same set of clothes everywhere. Additionally, cost to replace cheaper clothes financially impact their pocket if they are damaged.

It is argued that quality of inexpensive clothes is poor comparatively to expensive clothes, but cheap clothes are worn less over time which significantly improves their lifespan. In addition to this, most people cannot buy expensive clothes because of their low usablity and affordability. To illustrate, buying a expebsive tuxedo suit is rately used but costs a fortune, most of the time it sits in the closet. Likewise, people outgrow from their fashion choices over the time which makes sense in buying cheap clothes.

To conclude, it is easier to replace cheap clothes when they get damaged and out of trend rathe than buying few set of pairs which will Brampton hard to replace financially

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student presents a clear position throughout the response, disagreeing with the statement that it is better to buy a few expensive clothes. All parts of the prompt are addressed, and the ideas are supported by relevant arguments such as variety, confidence, and financial implications. However, some ideas lack full extension and suffer from minor generalisations. For instance, the discussion on why cheap clothes last longer or how expensive clothes sit in the closet could be more thoroughly explored. Nevertheless, the main task requirements are met adequately, aligning well with the Band 6 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used to signal transitions, such as 'First and foremost', 'Moreover', and 'To conclude'. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical, as seen in awkward transitions like 'reasons to this disbelief is further elaborated'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently, but overall progression can occasionally feel abrupt. This fits comfortably within the Band 6 descriptor criteria for coherence and cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student displays an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'implications', 'lifespan', and 'usability'. However, there are noticeable word-choice and spelling errors that detract from the overall precision, such as 'occassion', 'expebsive', 'rately', and 'Brampton' (likely meaning 'becoming'). While these errors do not impede communication, they reflect a Band 6 level where vocabulary use demonstrates sufficient adequacy with occasional inaccuracies.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt at varied syntactic structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors in agreement and phrasing, such as 'expensive clothes looks' instead of 'look', 'costs a fortune, most of the time' resulting in a comma splice, and 'outgrow from their fashion choices'. Punctuation errors are also present, particularly in the final sentence which lacks a full stop. These errors rarely impede overall communication, placing the response at a Band 5.5 to 6.0 level.
