Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, it is a trend to wear expensive clothes due to the influence of social influencers. I totally disagree with purchasing only a handful of expensive clothes rather than buying some budget-friendly ones. In this essay, I will discuss why I agree with this statement with adequate reasons.

It's obvious that the majority of people buy expensive clothes to increase their social status and keep up with current trends. According to their way of thinking, if they wear expensive clothes, they enhance their status by showing off their clothes. But it does not last long; the reason is that they cannot wear that cloth on a daily basis to look good. Instead, they have to buy a cloth that enhances their personality. Moreover, if they buy some cheap clothes and use the money to buy accessories like a gold ring and a chain, it will be worthwhile for them.

Second, people need different types of clothing for different occasions. A person may need formal clothes for work, comfortable clothes for college, sportswear for exercise, and casual clothes for weekends. Buying only a few expensive items may not provide enough variety for these situations. Having several affordable options can make daily life more convenient. For instance, someone working in an office may need several shirts and trousers so that they do not have to wear the same outfit repeatedly.

Moreover, a high price does not always mean better value. Some expensive clothes cost more because of the brand name, advertising, or fashionable design rather than significantly better quality. A reasonably priced product from a reliable company can sometimes be just as useful and durable. Therefore, consumers should consider the material, comfort, and usefulness of clothing instead of focusing only on its price.

From my own experience, I prefer reasonably priced clothes because I can maintain different outfits for college, work, and social activities without spending too much money.

In conclusion, I disagree with buying only a few expensive clothes. Affordable clothing can give people more freedom, variety, and practical choices while allowing them to manage their money responsiblity

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt directly, presenting a clear position agreeing with buying affordable clothes. However, there is a contradiction in the introduction where the student states, 'I totally disagree with purchasing only a handful of expensive clothes... In this essay, I will discuss why I agree with this statement,' which creates slight confusion regarding the stance, though the body paragraphs make the author's viewpoint clear. The ideas are supported with relevant reasons and personal examples, such as the need for different outfits for college, work, and social activities. While some arguments are a bit repetitive, the task is adequately addressed overall, earning a Band 6.5.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay is structured with logical paragraphing, featuring an introduction, distinct body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'Second,' 'Moreover,' and 'In conclusion.' However, some referencing is slightly awkward, as seen in the phrase 'cannot wear that cloth on a daily basis' (using 'cloth' instead of 'clothes' or 'clothing') and minor transitional disjointedness. Overall organisation is coherent and follows a logical progression, making the essay easy to follow, which fully satisfies the requirements for Band 6.5.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'budget-friendly,' 'social status,' 'durable,' and 'accessories.' However, there are some lexical inaccuracies and word-form errors, such as using 'cloth' instead of 'clothes' ('cannot wear that cloth on a daily basis') and a spelling error at the very end ('responsiblity' instead of 'responsibility'). Less common vocabulary is attempted with mixed success, placing the vocabulary profile firmly at Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing conditional and relative clauses effectively (e.g., 'If they wear expensive clothes, they enhance their status...'). There are some minor grammatical errors, such as article omissions or singular/plural mismatches, but these do not impede communication. The majority of simple sentences are accurate, and punctuation is generally handled well. This demonstrates a solid command of grammar consistent with a Band 6.5 level.
