Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is commonly seen that people purchase a limited number of expensive clothes with better quality rather than higher quantity of cheaper clothes. I largely agree with this trend because it offers the best quality, comfort and durability.

To begin with, expensive clothes often provide a better quality to their consumers. Because of the better fabrics and designs people perfer to buy few expensive attire to inexpensive ones. The more individuals buy limited high-priced clothes of good quality, the more people likely to spend money on low-priced outfits. If people started buying low-quality or cheaper clothes, it would encourage them manage with their low grade fabrics and low-level of comfortness. For instance, it is claimed by many consumers that due to low quality of fabrics, they had to buy more outfits as these did not provide them with comfort for a long-time. Furthermore, durability is the another reason behind this. While expensive clothes last for years, budget friendly outfits have shorter lasting time. What else durability offers is time saving. If buyers buy a few expensive clothes once, it will reduce their chances to go for shopping and save their time. For example, many renowned personalities often buy a limited but a good quality of expensive clothes so that they do not have to go for a shopping for a particular reason.

In conclusion, I totally agree that people should buy a low quantitiy of expensive clothes rather than buying large numbers of cheaper clothes because of quality, comfortness, durability and time-saving.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear position throughout, agreeing with the statement. The main ideas regarding quality, comfort, durability, and time-saving are introduced and supported with explanations. For instance, the writer notes that expensive clothes 'last for years' and reduce shopping frequency. However, some ideas in the second paragraph are slightly muddled or repetitive, such as the sentence 'The more individuals buy limited high-priced clothes of good quality, the more people likely to spend money on low-priced outfits,' which slightly hinders full logical development. Despite this minor weakness in idea extension, the position is well maintained and directly answers the prompt. Therefore, the task response aligns closely with the Band 6 descriptor criteria.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different main ideas, such as durability in the third paragraph. Cohesive devices are employed, including transition markers like 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion'. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical. For example, the phrase 'What else durability offers is time saving' feels awkward and unidiomatic. Additionally, pronoun referencing can be unclear, and some sentences lack smooth transitions between clauses. These issues place the response solidly within the Band 6 band descriptor for Coherence and Cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'durability', 'renowned personalities', and 'budget-friendly'. However, there are notable lexical errors and unnatural word choices throughout the text. For example, the non-standard word 'comfortness' is used instead of 'comfort', and phrases like 'shorter lasting time' and 'go for a shopping' display issues with collocation and preposition usage. While these errors do not impede overall communication, they prevent the vocabulary score from reaching a higher band. The response fits the Band 6 descriptor, which allows for some inaccuracy in less common vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The essay exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at conditional structures and relative clauses, such as 'If people started buying low-quality or cheaper clothes, it would encourage them manage with their low grade fabrics.' There are, however, several grammatical errors throughout the response. The missing infinitive marker in 'encourage them manage' and awkward phrasing like 'durability is the another reason' highlight persistent errors. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but grammatical slips in verb forms and article usage occur frequently. The control of grammar is sufficient to ensure communication is not impeded, placing the performance at Band 6.
