Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, people became more fasiohable due to new clothing trends on social media. Some people believe that it is better to purchase a few expensive clothes, rather than buying lots of cheaper clothes. I am partially agree with this statement. I will explain both the view points in the upcoming paragraphs.

Investing in expensive clothes has a lots of benefits as compare to buy tons of cheap clothes. First of all, expensive clothes have good quality of material and a long lasting value. You do need to worry about material and comfort level if you spend a good amount of money on the clothes. For example, if you buy expensive clothes you do not need to compromise with your comfor level. They will be made with a good qaulity material. Moreover, if you invest your money in name brand clothes like, Nike and Zara. you will have a good reputation in the society. Expensive clothes are always a sign of classy and rich poeple.

On the other hand, some people do not care about brand names and they buy clothes which are on sale. People think that if you buy cheap clothes than you can buy more variety clothes. You do not need repeat one clothes in months. For example, if you spend all your money to buy a expensive cloth then you do not have more options of clothes in your closet and you will have to repeat same cloth more than once. Moreover, buying a cheap clothes more advantages like stay up to date with trends, try different kind of designs on daily basis.

In conclusion, I would like to say that expensive and cheap clothes have their own advantages. However, I agree with the former statement that speding a few expensive clothes is better than buying tons of cheap clothes. I think you will have good quality, good reputation in the society and you can keep clothes for long time.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both sides of the issue regarding expensive versus cheap clothing and presenting a clear position by the end. The ideas presented are relevant to the topic, such as discussing durability and brand reputation for costly items versus variety and modern trends for budget alternatives. However, some parts of the argument are under-developed rather than fully explored. For instance, the discussion on social reputation in the second paragraph relies on general assertions without deeper expansion. Similarly, the conclusion introduces a slight contradiction by stating the writer is partially agree in the introduction, yet ultimately leaning clearly towards the former view in the final paragraph. To reach a higher level, the arguments require more thorough extension and support with more precise personal examples rather than repetitive statements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the writing into an introduction, two body paragraphs representing opposing views, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader through the text, such as 'First of all', 'Moreover', and 'On the other hand'. However, referencing and cohesion can sometimes feel mechanical or slightly repetitive, as seen with phrases like 'For example' and 'moreover' appearing frequently to link consecutive points. To achieve a higher level of cohesion and progression, the writer could make greater use of substitution and ellipsis, and ensure smoother transitions between sentences without relying so heavily on formulaic transitional markers.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common words and phrases such as 'reputation in the society', 'durable', and 'trends'. However, there are noticeable spelling errors, such as 'fasiohable' instead of fashionable, and several word-choice and word-form inaccuracies, including 'I am partially agree' instead of agreeing, 'more variety clothes' instead of a greater variety of clothes, and 'speding' instead of spending. Furthermore, there are awkward collocations like 'buy a expensive cloth' and 'repeat one clothes'. These lexical slips and spelling mistakes reflect an adequate rather than advanced control of vocabulary, though they do not seriously impede overall communication of the main ideas.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, attempting conditional clauses and relative clauses such as 'if you spend a good amount of money on the clothes'. There is control over basic sentence patterns, but the text contains a number of grammatical errors involving articles ('a expensive cloth', 'buy a cheap clothes'), prepositions ('as compare to'), pluralisation ('one clothes', 'same cloth'), and subject-verb agreement ('people became'). Despite these errors in grammar and punctuation, they rarely impede communication, and the meaning remains clear throughout the essay. To progress further, the writer needs to increase the proportion of error-free sentences and exercise better control over articles and plurals within complex grammatical structures.
