Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued among forks that purchasing a small number of expensive clothes upon buying a large quanity of inexpensive ones. I strongly agree with this view because high quality garments tend to offer a longer durability as compare to cheaper qualty clothes.

One major advantage of investing in expensive and branded clothes is superior quality and longevity as garments made from good quality fabrics are genrally more resistant to wear and tear, mesaning that they can remain in good condition after severasl years. For example, a well made winter coat of high quality fabrics may cost more than an inexpensive alternative but it could last for four or five years, whereas a cheaper coat made of low material need to replace after every six month or a year. Therefore, quality should not be compromise over quanity.

Another improtant consideration is enviromental impact of excessive consumption. The widespread availabilty of cheap clothign encourages youngsters to purchased more items in less budgets as a result discard later on when they are no longer fanshionable.By purchasing less but long lasting clothes of good company and quality consumer can brin=g down unnecessarhy waste and adopt more responsible pattern of consumption.

On the other hand, inexpensive clothes play improtant role in some people life. Not everyone can afford expensive clothes as they have to deal with their basic needs withourt placing excessive pressure on their finances but for other who can afford expensive clothes can prioritise quality always rather having quanity more sensible.

In conclusion, I believe that people should never compromise quanity if they have good source of money they should always go with well made clothes which can provide better long term value, also help to reduce unnecessary consumption and environmental damage.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position throughout in favor of buying a small number of expensive, high-quality clothes over many cheap alternatives. The main ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as comparing the longevity of an expensive winter coat to a cheap one, and discussing the environmental impact of fast fashion. However, there is a slight tendency to over-generalize in places, such as when discussing how youngsters discard items quickly, and some supporting points could be further elaborated with deeper analysis. Overall, the response fully satisfies the requirements for this level through a well-maintained stance and generally extended ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a clear overall logical organization and progression throughout, moving smoothly from the introduction to body paragraphs discussing durability and environmental impact, acknowledging a counter-argument, and concluding effectively. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a central topic. Cohesive devices are used adequately, such as 'One major advantage', 'Another important consideration', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion'. However, referencing and cohesion can occasionally feel somewhat mechanical or formulaic, bridging into features of the next band where cohesion is managed even more seamlessly and flexibly. Minor slips in logical transitions prevent the response from achieving a higher rating.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task and attempts to use some less common lexical items such as 'longevity', 'fabrics', 'environmental impact', and 'consumption'. However, there are notable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'forks' instead of 'folks', 'quanity' instead of 'quantity', 'compare' instead of 'comparison', 'genrally', 'mesaning', 'severasl', 'fanshionable', and 'unnecessarhy'. These errors indicate a lack of precision in spelling and occasional awkward collocations or word forms. While communication is not severely impeded, the frequency of these lexical inaccuracies places the response firmly within this band, needing greater control over spelling and word choices to reach a higher level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to construct varied sentences like conditional or comparative structures (e.g., 'Not everyone can afford expensive clothes as they have to deal with their basic needs...'). However, there are persistent errors in grammar, punctuation, and word patterns, such as missing articles ('need to replace after every six month'), incorrect prepositions ('upon buying' instead of 'over buying', 'in less budgets'), and structural fragments or run-on sentences ('consumer can bring down unnecessary waste'). These errors represent a mix of simple and complex forms where grammar slips occasionally cause minor confusion, aligning precisely with the criteria for this band.
