Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that purchasing a small number of valuable clothes is much more advantageous than purchasing large number of cheaper ones. In my view purchasing expensive clothes is usually beneficial as they are more durable and their colours donot shed early. However, people buying expensive or cheaper clothes is not the real debate in my point of view as what matters is the expense which should taken into consideration.

One of the reason that purchasing expensive clothes can be beneficial is that the fabric is durable, doesnot shed off easily can be worn in long run and do not require replacement earlier than 3-4 years. These items require greater investment initally but are worth investing in. There shapes dont go loose after few washes, fabric does not feel worned out and they always give a new look whenever they are worn. These qualities however, make them non-replaceable frequently. For example, purchasing a well-made winter coat is more economical then buying a cheaper one and replacing it every year. Therefore, investing in a few durable garments can help consumers save money over time.

Another advantage of purchasing expensive clothing is that is does not make an individual tempted toward seasonal clothes and makes them more responsible towards their clothing. it also hepls an individual with having a sustainable wardrobe and promotes environmental stability by decreasing the amount of textile waste. Neverthless, expensive clothing is not a best option for people with limited income they can also have reasonably priced clothes according to there need for separate ocassions and this is also not a detrimental option.

In conclusion, expensive clothes are beneficial with regard to their durability, timeless wearing, greater sustainability and decreasing temptations towards seasonal clothings. However, purchasing expensive or cheaper clothes is a persons own choice depending upon there sustainable income and there clothing preferences.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: you generally favour buying more expensive clothes because they last longer and may reduce textile waste, while acknowledging that affordability and personal preference matter. The winter-coat example gives relevant support to the durability argument, and the conclusion returns to your main points. This meets the task well, but the two sides are not developed equally. The sustainability and reduced temptation to buy seasonal clothes are asserted rather than explained with a specific example, and the final claim that the choice depends on income and preference slightly softens your position without clarifying when cheaper clothing might be preferable. Develop these points with a concrete illustration and make your overall judgement more decisive to strengthen the response further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting advantages and a qualification, and a conclusion. Ideas generally progress logically, and linking expressions such as “For example,” “Therefore,” and “However” help show relationships. The first body paragraph is especially easy to follow, moving from durability to the coat example and its financial benefit. At times, cohesion is less controlled: the opening paragraph’s point about expense being the real issue is not clearly connected to the later argument, and the second body paragraph shifts from seasonal buying to sustainability and then affordability quite quickly. Some transitions feel formulaic. Group related ideas more tightly and use clearer references between sentences so the reader can follow how each point supports your position.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “durable,” “replacement,” “sustainable wardrobe,” and “textile waste,” which helps communicate the main arguments. There are also attempts at more precise expressions, such as “limited income” and “reasonably priced.” However, several word-choice and collocation errors reduce naturalness: “colours donot shed” is not an appropriate way to describe fading, “timeless wearing” is unclear, and “environmental stability” does not express the intended environmental benefit naturally. Spelling and word-form slips such as “initally,” “Neverthless,” and “clothings” also affect accuracy. Aim for familiar, precise collocations and check spelling and forms carefully; this will make your vocabulary more flexible and convincing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a relative clause in “a cheaper one and replacing it every year” and a contrast introduced by “However.” The main ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur and occasionally make sentences awkward. For example, “One of the reason” needs plural agreement, while “the expense which should taken into consideration” is missing a verb form. In “Another advantage … is that is does not make,” the clause structure and pronoun are faulty. There are also errors with articles, possessives, and sentence-initial capitalization, as in “a best option,” “There shapes,” and “it also.” Practise checking agreement, complete verb phrases, and sentence boundaries while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
