Student answer (Band 6.0)

There has been an ongoing debate regarding whether expensive clothes are better choice or cheaper ones. While some people believe that buying expensive clothes provide quality and durability. Other individual asserts that buying more clothes at cheaper prices are more beneficial. I partly agree with the formal point, However, it highly depends on individuals choices and needs.

One of the major reasons, people choose to buy clothes which are expensive because it provides good material and durability. High quality of clothes are made of great craftmenship and best quality of material, which gives them the perfect finishing and premium look. In addition to this, many individuals doesn't enjoy shopping that often and prefer to invest in high quality trousers for daily uses, as there will be less wear and tear involved and it will last for years. Therefore, I believe it is beneficial for people to invest in high quality of clothes rather than purchasing same items for many times.

On the other hand, the people who supports buying cheaper clothes believe that it gives them chance to wear different styles and choice. Many individuals, especially young adults are influenced by fast fashion and want to wear different clothes on the daily basis. For instance, a young adult studying in college would choose to buy more clothes at cheaper rates, so that he can wear different outfits to the college everyday. Similarly, some individuals easily gets bored by wearing some kind of clothes for longer time and would choose to buy different colours and styles of clothing.

In conclusion, I believe the expensive clothes offer great quality and durability. Some individuals would still prefer cheaper clothes over expensive because of the fast fashion and variety it provides.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your response addresses the question and presents a qualified position: you partly agree that expensive clothes are preferable, while recognising the appeal of cheaper options. The durability argument is relevant and supported by the example of investing in trousers for everyday use. You also explain why young adults may choose cheaper clothes, including variety and changing styles. However, the position is less clear in the conclusion, which summarises both views without restating how you weigh them. Some points, such as the claim that expensive clothes offer better quality, would benefit from a specific example or fuller explanation. Make your degree of agreement explicit throughout and develop the comparison between long-term value and variety more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two perspectives, and a conclusion. The contrast between the body paragraphs is easy to follow, and linking phrases such as “In addition to this,” “On the other hand,” and “For instance” help signal relationships between ideas. This organisation is effective, and the progression is generally logical. To make cohesion more flexible and precise, avoid relying on formulaic transitions and connect examples more explicitly to your main position. For instance, the college example illustrates the appeal of cheaper clothes, but you could explain how this consideration affects your overall judgement. The conclusion also repeats the two sides rather than bringing them together into a decisive final view.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “quality and durability,” “wear and tear,” “fast fashion,” and “different styles.” These expressions make the discussion relevant and generally clear, and you attempt some less common wording such as “premium look” and “craftsmanship.” However, several word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors reduce precision: “formal point” is not the intended expression, “daily uses” is awkward, and “craftmenship” is misspelled. Phrases such as “great material” and “same items for many times” are also imprecise. Aim to use natural collocations and check spelling, especially when using less familiar vocabulary. More precise language would help distinguish durability, cost-effectiveness, and fashion variety.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “while,” “because,” and “so that.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “buying expensive clothes provide” needs subject–verb agreement, while “High quality of clothes are made” has problems with both the noun phrase and agreement. In “many individuals doesn't enjoy,” the verb form should agree with the plural subject. There are also sentence-boundary and punctuation issues: “While some people believe … durability” is a fragment, and “However” is incorrectly capitalised after a comma. Review agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries, then proofread punctuation. Greater accuracy across these structures would make your argument smoother.
