Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing this letter to complain about the purchase of cloth.

Last sunday, My family went to your Showroom which is situated at Ambala. My mother had bought a three set of blanket from your brand which is of reasonable price. In past we bought a lot of blankets like that. However, this time all the pairs of blankets are not good .I think these are torn from inside. Even one blanket has faded colour. My family really disappoints from this. I think we spent almost 12000 rupees. In addition to it, my family is living in delhi and we just come to ambala to buy blanket from your store. Actually it is marriage of my elder sister. we are purchasing the stuff for marriage and it is on next week. So, I kindly request you replace it as soon as possible.

I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Harshd

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt: providing purchase details, describing the defects, and explaining the urgency. However, the response contains a significant misunderstanding of the task instructions. The prompt explicitly states you bought the clothing 'online', yet your letter describes visiting a physical 'showroom' in Ambala. This inconsistency impacts the task achievement score. While the ideas are relevant, the development is slightly hindered by this factual contradiction. To improve, ensure you strictly adhere to the scenario provided in the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the purchase details to the problem and finally the request for action. Paragraphing is present, though the structure is somewhat cramped. You use some cohesive devices like 'However', 'In addition to it', and 'Actually', but the flow is occasionally interrupted by short, choppy sentences. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph transitions smoothly into the next to create a more cohesive narrative.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task but remains quite basic. You rely on simple descriptors like 'not good' and 'torn'. There are also some minor errors in word choice, such as using 'cloth' (the material) instead of 'clothing' or 'items'. To improve, try to incorporate more specific vocabulary related to retail and product complaints, such as 'defective', 'unsatisfactory', or 'damaged'. Expanding your range of adjectives and nouns will help you convey your dissatisfaction more precisely and professionally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including issues with articles ('a three set of blanket'), subject-verb agreement ('My family really disappoints'), and tense consistency ('we just come to ambala'). While the meaning is generally clear, these errors are noticeable and occur across a range of sentence structures. You should focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement and the correct use of plural versus singular nouns. Proofreading for common errors like missing articles will significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
