Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear sir/ madam,

I am writing this letter to express my disappointment regarding the product that i bought from website.

I purchased t-shirt for the college party. I was looking for bright colour t-shirt, and i came across red one. I instantly bought it. It was $110. It delivered in 5 days, but when i opened it, it was blue in colour, which is not my favourite colour to wear in clothes.

Moreover, I bought a expensive piece of cloth from your website, but i got wrong product. So if you can replace my product with right one. I am really delight to do it or refund my money of my product.

However, the product is extremely comfortable and good in material. I am thinking to buy some more products from your store or website in future as well.

I am looking forward to your reply. I hope you understand my problem and help me towards my whole process.

Best Regards,

Krinesh Gosai

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points: purchase details, the problem, and the need for a replacement. However, the third bullet point regarding the urgency of the replacement is not fully developed. While you mention the need for a replacement, you do not explicitly explain why it is needed 'urgently' (e.g., mentioning the date of the college party). The tone is generally appropriate for a formal complaint, though the structure could be more persuasive to ensure the company prioritizes your request.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive (e.g., 'Moreover', 'However'). Some transitions between sentences feel abrupt, such as the jump from discussing the refund to praising the material of the shirt. Improving the flow between sentences would help the letter feel more natural and professional.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message, such as 'disappointment', 'instantly', and 'comfortable'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'I am really delight to do it' (should be 'delighted') and 'expensive piece of cloth' (should be 'clothing' or 'garment'). Additionally, the repeated use of 'product' and 'website' limits the variety of your language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

There are frequent errors in basic grammar, particularly with articles ('a bright colour t-shirt', 'the college party') and capitalization (the pronoun 'i' is consistently lowercase). You use a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but the control is inconsistent. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the main point, they are noticeable and occur throughout the text, which limits the score.
