Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear sir,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this email you about my recent purchase of dress. I love buying the clothes from your website as I love its verity but i would love to have a replacement with my dress.
This was the pink dress with embroidery on it it cost me around $70 but i love it . The problem is that it is really lose for me. It seems like a size mistake as my size it small but the size of dress is extra large. This dress is really important for me and i urgently want to replace it because of my sisters wedding which is on next Thursday. i already got everything related to dress and i don't have a time to exchange everything else too. So can you please replace it for me as soon as possible.
I would really appreciate it. Enjoy rest of your day.
kind regards,
Soni

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: providing purchase details, describing the problem, and explaining the urgency. The tone is appropriate for a formal complaint letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For example, while you mention the dress is 'really important' for a wedding, adding a bit more detail about why this specific dress is essential would strengthen the response. Overall, you have fulfilled the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points easily. You use some basic cohesive devices like 'The problem is that' and 'So can you please'. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'as a result') to connect your sentences more fluidly. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is clear throughout the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. You use some specific terms like 'embroidery' and 'replacement'. However, there are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'verity' (likely meaning 'variety') and 'lose' (should be 'loose'). To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise adjectives and collocations related to retail and customer service, such as 'incorrect sizing' or 'expedited shipping'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I am writing this email you about' (missing 'to'), 'I love buying the clothes' (article usage), and 'I don't have a time' (unnecessary article). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with capitalization and run-on sentences. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will help improve your accuracy.
