Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir/Madam
I am writing this letter to express my dissatisfaction about the product which I have purchased online from your website. I often order from your website as your product's quality is so good.
I have ordered a blue jean and its size was medium, which has been delivered today at my home. When I tried it, I have realized that the jean's size was large. It was so loose that I was not able to even fit it with a belt. I did not expect this kind of irresponsibility towards the customer's demand. I really need a replacement till tomorrow as I have some important plans with my friends for day after tomorrow.
I would appreciate it if you could replace this jean with size M and deliver it as soon as possible. I hope you will help me in this matter.
Looking forward for your prompt response.
Yours faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly provided details of the purchase, described the sizing issue, and explained the urgency of the replacement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands the situation and the desired outcome. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific details about the order, such as an order number or the date of purchase, to make the letter feel more authentic and professional.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the introduction of the problem to the explanation and finally the request for action. Cohesive devices such as 'I am writing to', 'When I tried it', and 'I would appreciate it if' are used effectively to link sentences. However, the paragraphing could be slightly improved by ensuring the transition between the description of the problem and the request for a replacement is more fluid. Overall, the structure is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, such as 'dissatisfaction', 'irresponsibility', and 'prompt response'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'fit it with a belt' (which should be 'fasten it with a belt') and 'blue jean' (which is usually pluralized as 'blue jeans'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more precise descriptive language or professional business terminology would elevate the response to a higher band level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'I have realized' (should be 'I realized' as it refers to a specific past event) and 'Looking forward for' (should be 'Looking forward to'). Additionally, the phrase 'till tomorrow' is slightly unnatural in this context; 'by tomorrow' would be more accurate. Despite these errors, the meaning is never obscured, and the grammar is generally functional. To improve, focus on consistent tense usage and common prepositional collocations.
