Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing express deepest displeasure with the recent purchase that I made from you store. On last Sunday, June 27th,2026, I visited your store items due to lured store offers. When I checked the store clothing, I liked a Black Denim Jacket along with the pearls on the sleeves to enrich the overall look. However, I was told to order online from the store website, as Jacket of my size was not available.

Unfortunately, When I received my order, I was shocked after looking at the box, as it was terribly damaged. However, It did not bother me a lot, given that product was matter a lot for me. But, upon to unboxing the product, I found a damage not only on the right sleeves but also on the back of the jacket too. The stiches was worn off, which could make product not worthwhile to the money I spend on purchase.

To mitigate the issues, I would request you to provide replacement as soon as possible, as I need this jacket to wear on my birthday which is on next Tuesday. I have planned a theme party which suppose to go with the dress code and for that I made a plan to were it on my special day.

I believe these problems require immediate attention, and I would appreciate it if you resolve the issue urgently to maintain the customer experience. Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to your response.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identified the purchase details, described the damage to the jacket, and provided a logical reason for the urgency of the replacement. The tone is appropriate for a formal complaint letter, and the purpose is clear throughout. To reach a higher band, ensure that the details provided are slightly more precise; for instance, mentioning an order number would have added a layer of realism to the task. Overall, the response is well-structured and fully satisfies the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. You use some cohesive devices effectively, such as 'However' and 'To mitigate the issues'. However, there are instances where the flow is slightly hindered by awkward phrasing, such as 'However, It did not bother me a lot, given that product was matter a lot for me.' Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the overall coherence. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the clarity of your message.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'displeasure', 'mitigate', and 'worthwhile'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'lured store offers' (should be 'attractive store offers') and 'stiches was worn off' (should be 'stitching was coming apart'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise vocabulary usage. Expanding your range of collocations and checking word forms will help you achieve a higher score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the jacket' vs 'a jacket'), subject-verb agreement ('stiches was'), and verb forms ('suppose to go' instead of 'is supposed to go'). While these errors are noticeable, they rarely prevent the reader from understanding your meaning. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy, especially regarding tense consistency and pluralization, which will allow your more complex structures to shine.
