Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir/Madam,

This letter is in regards to the Microwave that I recently brought from your shop.

The one of the major problem with this equipment is that some of its features are not working such as frozen food. Sometimes, I have to use the frozen food because I am in the hurry, and it is heating all food items with same pace.

Fortnight back, I called at your shop. I spoke with Heena, and I told her all about the issue. Unfortunately, she told me that I am not entitle for refund.

I would be very thankful to you, if you either change the equipment or give me refund. Actually, It has been just week before since I brought that microwave, I think full refund would be better. Moreover, if you wants to give me replacement, please check thoroughly that all its features work properly.

I hope you understand my situation, and give me better solution.

Yours sincerely,

Harshpreet Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: providing purchase details, describing the problem, and explaining the need for a replacement. However, there is a significant content error: the prompt asks you to write about clothing, but you have written about a microwave. This is a major misunderstanding of the task instructions. While the letter is structured appropriately for a formal complaint, the failure to address the specific topic (clothing) significantly impacts your score. To improve, ensure you read the prompt carefully to identify the subject matter before drafting your response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'Unfortunately' to link your ideas. However, the progression of ideas is occasionally hindered by awkward phrasing, such as the transition between the problem description and the previous contact with the shop. The use of paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the overall structure is easy to follow, though the flow could be improved with more varied linking words and smoother transitions between sentences.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your needs clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'refund', 'replacement', and 'thoroughly'. However, there are several word-choice errors, such as 'brought' instead of 'bought', 'in the hurry' instead of 'in a hurry', and 'entitle' instead of 'entitled'. These errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring correct word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you successfully convey your meaning, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'The one of the major problem' (article and noun agreement), 'it is heating all food items with same pace' (missing article), and 'if you wants' (subject-verb agreement). These errors are frequent, though they rarely impede communication. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement, article usage, and verb tense consistency, as these are recurring issues in your writing.
