Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to request a replacement of black formal pent that I bought from your store.
I bought a black formal pent from your online site the order number is Z963DER. Along with pent I also bought a white shirt and and a black blazer. A part from, pent order seemed alright. The pent I order should be waist 30 but I received wrong size. This is waist 28 and it is too tight for me. I have already visited your store regarding this issue. They said this was a packing mistake from our staff. Unfortunately they could not help me as they were out of stock for waist 30 for similar article.
I bought this outfit to attend my friend's anniversary which is on 8 August. I have only 9 days left to get a replacement. Therefore I hope you will understand my urgency and resolve my issue as soon as possible.
Sincerely,
Maninderpal Singh.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: providing purchase details, describing the problem, and explaining the urgency of the replacement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. The ideas are relevant and clearly communicated, ensuring the reader understands the situation immediately. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the impact of the error or provide more specific details about the desired resolution process, but overall, the task requirements are fully met.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the introduction to the problem description and finally the urgency of the request. Paragraphing is used to separate these ideas, which helps the reader follow your argument. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat limited and occasionally mechanical. For example, the transition 'A part from, pent order' is grammatically awkward and disrupts the flow. Using a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'Furthermore', 'Consequently', 'In addition to this') would improve the overall cohesion of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have an adequate range of vocabulary to communicate your message effectively. However, there are several spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'pent' instead of 'pants' or 'trousers', and 'A part from' instead of 'Apart from'. These errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning. To improve, focus on mastering common collocations related to retail and customer service. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise terms for clothing and business correspondence will help you achieve a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'The pent I order should be' (should be 'ordered') and 'this was a packing mistake from our staff' (should be 'by our staff'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article usage issues throughout the text. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to limit the score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
