Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to express my dissatisfaction about a clothing product that I brought from your website.

Last week , I ordered a blue coloured long dress ORDER NO. [redacted phone]. The material which was displayed and mentioned was pure cotton with some embroidery on sleeves. And I received the dress after 4 business days from my delivery date.

The problem was the dress which i got was totally different from the displayed item. When I opened the package ,I saw the colour was very fade ,even the one of the sleeve was ripped and the length was not expected what I ordered .Moreover, I paid extra for fast delivery which unfortunately I lost .

I request you to replace this item with another one as my every important convocation is coming in couple of days. And I specially ordered this dress for that event . I would aprreciate if you could process my order to replace with new one .

I look forward to your positive response and a quick resolution to this matter.

Yours faithfully

Sukhman

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You provided the purchase details (order number), described the specific defects (faded color, ripped sleeve, incorrect length), and explained the urgency regarding your upcoming convocation. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between the points is slightly more fluid. For example, you could explicitly state the impact of the delivery delay more clearly in relation to your need for a replacement. Overall, the task is fully accomplished.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter follows a logical structure with clear paragraphing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'Last week' to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words. Some transitions feel slightly mechanical or abrupt, such as the jump between describing the dress and mentioning the delivery fee. Improving the use of referencing (e.g., using 'this' or 'the latter' to refer back to previous points) would help the text feel more cohesive and professional.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. You use specific terms like 'embroidery', 'convocation', and 'dissatisfaction'. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'brought' instead of 'bought' and 'fade' instead of 'faded'. Additionally, 'every important convocation' is slightly unnatural; 'my important convocation' or 'a significant event' would be better. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the vocabulary from reaching a higher band. Focus on using more precise adjectives and ensuring correct verb forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'the one of the sleeve' (should be 'one of the sleeves') and 'I would aprreciate if you could process my order to replace with new one' (missing an article or pronoun). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are some spacing issues before commas. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your complaint. To improve, pay closer attention to article usage and subject-verb agreement.
