Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this latter to inform you about the shirt which I have bought from your shop last week. However, I have noticed the problem associated with it.
To begin with, On the 22nd July, I have bought two pairs of shirt which are blue in color. However, I am not satisfied with the size of it. Moreover, I have tried it once but it is really small size for me . Due to that, I need to change it as early as possible as I have the interview in upcoming week. Could you please help me with the replacement of it? If not then can you please provide me the similar product from different company? I really appreciate your assistance with the whole process. I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Thank you for your time and assistance.
Your's sincerely,
Riddhi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt: details of the purchase, the nature of the problem, and the urgency of the replacement. The tone is appropriate for a formal complaint. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the explanation regarding the interview could be expanded to sound more professional, and the request for a different company's product is slightly illogical in a standard return scenario. Despite these minor points, the purpose of the letter is clear and the requirements are met.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear opening and closing. Paragraphing is present, though the body of the letter is somewhat compressed. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'However', and 'Moreover' are used to link ideas, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The progression of information is easy to follow, and the reader is never confused about the writer's intent. To improve, ensure that each paragraph focuses on a distinct aspect of the task to enhance the overall structure.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate the situation clearly. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'two pairs of shirt' (which should be 'two shirts') and 'small size for me' (which is slightly unnatural). The range of vocabulary is sufficient to convey the message but lacks the precision or variety that would characterize a higher band score. Using more specific terms related to retail and customer service would elevate the quality of the writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I am writing this latter' (spelling: letter), 'I have bought' (past simple 'bought' is more appropriate for a specific time in the past), and 'Your's sincerely' (punctuation: Yours). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. The writer demonstrates a basic control of grammar, but more attention to verb tenses and punctuation is needed to reach a higher band.
