Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter because I have an issue with the clothes that I bought online last week from your website.
Firstly, I purchased one shirt from your site on last week and the color of that shirt is blue, and it is small in size. In addition, it has a design of tiger on the front of the shirt which is white in color.
Moreover, the main problem in the shirt that I ordered medium size shirt and dark blue color, but I got small size shirt and I received red color shirt instead of blue color. Furthermore, the shirt is also damaged from the back side.
I would like to replace this shirt urgently with new one because I have to attend one of my friends wedding ceremony after 4 days and I have to wear this shirt on that day. Therefore, I want replacement as soon as possible urgently.
Thank you for your time.
Best regards,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: providing purchase details, describing the problem, and explaining the urgency of the replacement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. However, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive; for instance, you describe the shirt's features in the second paragraph and then repeat the size and color discrepancies in the third. To improve, try to integrate the description of the item directly with the explanation of the error to create a more concise and professional flow. Overall, the message is clear and the purpose of the letter is fully achieved.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You make good use of cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'In addition', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore' to signal the progression of your points. While the paragraphing is appropriate, the transition between the description of the item and the specific problems could be smoother. At times, the repetition of information makes the progression feel slightly mechanical. Using a wider variety of linking phrases or combining sentences would help the text flow more naturally and improve the overall cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your complaint effectively. Words like 'purchased', 'replacement', and 'ceremony' are used correctly. However, there is some repetition of basic terms like 'shirt' and 'color'. To reach a higher band, try to use more precise descriptive language or synonyms. For example, instead of repeating 'shirt' multiple times, you could use 'garment' or 'item'. There are no significant spelling errors, and your word choice is generally accurate enough to convey your meaning without any confusion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'on last week' (should be 'last week'), 'design of tiger' (should be 'a tiger design'), and 'one of my friends wedding' (should be 'friend's wedding'). Additionally, there are some issues with article usage and prepositional phrases. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles will significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
