Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter regarding an issue with the cloth that I bought online from your website.

I purchased a T-shirt from your site 4 days ago. I ordered the T-shirt in pink color and medium in size. Also, it has a design on the front of the T-shirt, which is white in color, and it has half sleeves.

After receiving the cloth, I tried a fitting check. It comes in a small size instead of medium. Also, the color is very dull and different from the website. The T-shirt is damaged on the back side.

I would like to replace this T-shirt with a new one, which will be the same ordered before. I need to urgently replacement because I have to go on a trip with my friends in 2 days, and I want to wear this on that day. Therefore, I want to exchange it as soon as possible.

Thank you for your time.

Best regards,

Khyati Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You provided details of the purchase (T-shirt, pink, medium), described the problems (wrong size, dull color, damage), and explained the urgency (trip in 2 days). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. To reach a higher band, ensure that the description of the item is more concise, as the current level of detail regarding the design is slightly excessive for a complaint letter. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and the requirements are fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Also', 'Therefore', and 'After receiving'. While the flow is logical, the use of linking words is somewhat repetitive and mechanical. To improve, try to incorporate a wider variety of cohesive devices and ensure that the transition between sentences feels more natural rather than relying on simple conjunctions at the start of every sentence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. You use specific terms like 'damaged', 'exchange', and 'replacement'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'cloth' (which refers to the material, whereas 'item' or 'garment' would be more appropriate for a piece of clothing) and 'fitting check' (which is not a standard collocation). Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise business-related terminology would help elevate your score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'I need to urgently replacement' (should be 'I urgently need a replacement') and 'the same ordered before' (which is slightly awkward phrasing). Additionally, 'which will be the same ordered before' is a bit clunky. Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the mistakes do not impede communication. Focusing on word order and the correct use of articles will help improve your accuracy.
