Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

Hope you are doing well. I am writing to share my experience with the purchase I made from your company on an online platform. I am really disappointed with the clothes I received in the parcel.

Last weekend, I bought a hoodie and a sweatshirt from your online app, those were really looking preety and stuff was also appeared good on the app, and some reviews were also good, and that is why I placed an order for both.

I was so excited and waiting for the parcel, but unfortunately, when i received the parcel and opened that what I found is the hoodie's colour was really faded, and the sweatshirt I ordered had threads out of the cloth.

I was really disheartened because of this.

I am requesting that you replace them with what I was expecting. I need a replacement as soon as possible because i need to attend my friend's birthday, which is on the upcoming weekend.

Thank you for your time and assistance.

Yours faithfully,

Inderpreet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: providing details of the purchase, describing the defects, and explaining the urgency of the replacement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. The ideas are clearly presented, and the purpose of the letter is immediately apparent. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific details, such as an order number or the exact date of purchase, to make the scenario feel more authentic and fully developed. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the prompt effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter follows a logical structure, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for the details and the problem, and a concluding request. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate these ideas. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'but unfortunately' and 'because of this,' which help the flow of information. However, the connection between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'furthermore,' 'consequently,' or 'in addition'). The progression of ideas is clear, and the reader can easily follow your narrative from the initial purchase to the final request for a replacement.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Words like 'disappointed,' 'disheartened,' and 'assistance' are used correctly. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'stuff was also appeared good,' which is slightly unnatural. Additionally, 'preety' is misspelled. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations related to retail, such as 'defective items' or 'unsatisfactory quality.' While the vocabulary is sufficient for the task, expanding your range to include more sophisticated or topic-specific terminology would help you achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'those were really looking preety' (should be 'looked pretty') and 'threads out of the cloth' (should be 'frayed threads'). There are also some punctuation and capitalization slips, such as the lowercase 'i' in several instances. The sentence structure is generally functional, but you should aim for more error-free complex sentences to demonstrate better control. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent capitalization will significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
