Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to express my disappointment related to a faulty item of clothing that I purchased from your website.

Recently on 23rd July 2026, I bought a beautiful woman cord set from nyka.com. The cost of the product is INR2500. The cord set has a colourful printed flowers on the bottom of the shirt. It gave classy as well as elegant look and instantly I ordered it.

On the official website, it seemed to be absolutely fine. However, upon reaching home, I found a small tear on the back of the shirt. Besides this, I ordered it in light blue color but received it in red color.

I can resend it back to you through official site. However, I bought it for wearing on my birthday party which is celebrated on day after tommarow. Hence, I need an urgent replacement and want it back tommarow.

However, if a customer is paying such exorbitant prices, he/she is entitled to quality goods. So i would appreciate if could replace it as soon as possible.

I am looking forward to your prompt response.

Your’s Sincerely,

Justin

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You provided the purchase details (date, item, price), clearly described the problems (tear and incorrect color), and explained the urgency regarding your birthday party. The tone is appropriate for a formal complaint letter. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. To reach a higher band, ensure that the transition between the description of the problem and the request for a replacement is smoother, and avoid slightly contradictory statements, such as saying you can resend it yourself while simultaneously demanding an urgent replacement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task. You use some cohesive devices like 'However', 'Besides this', and 'Hence' to link your ideas. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by slightly mechanical transitions. For example, the use of 'However' at the start of the final paragraph feels repetitive as it was used in the previous paragraph. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that the logical progression between sentences is more fluid would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'faulty', 'exorbitant', and 'entitled'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'woman cord set' (should be 'women’s co-ord set') and 'celebrated on day after tommarow' (should be 'the day after tomorrow'). Additionally, 'resend it back' is slightly redundant. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over vocabulary and spelling. Expanding your range to include more sophisticated collocations related to customer service would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, including 'a beautiful woman cord set' (article/noun usage), 'it gave classy as well as elegant look' (missing article), and 'day after tommarow' (spelling and preposition usage). The phrase 'I would appreciate if could replace it' is missing the subject 'you'. While the meaning is always clear, these frequent minor errors in grammar and punctuation prevent the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles will significantly improve your accuracy.
