Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to express dissatisfaction for online clothing purchase. One week ago, I was searching for children clothes fofrom the official site of old navy.

I ordered two pents, two coats for the M size and black in colour. The price was $ 100 for everthing through the online payment. After receiving my order, I opened my parcel and came to know that both size and colour in not matching. I was in L size and red in colours. Both clothing items were totally unappropriate for my children. Furthermore, $150 was deducted from my credit card that shocked me.

I request you please send me another sets according to my preference, because my children prefer to wear new outfits in the upcoming birthday party. Moreover, you must return my additional payment, so that next time I can trust on your site.

Expecting your corporating in with regards.

Your faithfully,

Sukhman

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: it provides purchase details, describes the issues with the items and the billing, and explains the urgency regarding the birthday party. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal complaint letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. While the requirements are met, the explanation of the problem could be more precise, and the request for a replacement is a bit abrupt. Overall, the letter successfully communicates the necessary information to the recipient, fulfilling the task requirements effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. The progression of ideas is easy to follow, moving from the purchase details to the problems and finally to the requested solution. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Furthermore' and 'Moreover', although some transitions feel a bit mechanical. The use of referencing is generally clear, though the sentence structure occasionally hinders the flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different sections of the letter, which helps the reader navigate the content efficiently.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is sufficient for the task, allowing the writer to convey the necessary information clearly. There are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'unappropriate' instead of 'inappropriate' and 'corporating' instead of 'cooperation'. Additionally, the phrasing 'came to know that' is slightly unnatural in this context. While the range is adequate to express the situation, there is a lack of more sophisticated or precise vocabulary that would elevate the response to a higher band. The errors present do not impede communication, but they are noticeable.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, including article usage ('the M size'), preposition errors ('in colours'), and verb tense/agreement issues ('size and colour in not matching'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are errors in the closing salutation ('Your faithfully'). While the meaning is always clear, the frequency of these minor errors prevents the response from reaching a higher band. The writer demonstrates a basic command of sentence construction, but more attention to detail and proofreading is required.
