Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my dissatisfaction regarding the clothes that I had bought from your online store last week.

I have received it on 21st July, 2026 and the bill number is XY1234.The dress is a saree ,which has a golden border, and the color is magenta. Moreover, it has a very good reviews and five star ratings.

When the package was delivered to me, it was dirty and the seal was broken. However, when I unpacked it, I found that there is a big stain across the material. I was really shocked and disappointed, since I purchased the saree for my cousins marriage.

My function will be on next Monday. I would appreciate if you could arrange an another piece as a replacement within that timeframe, or I will demand a full refund.

I am looking forward to your prompt reply.

Yours faithfully

Honey Donald

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly provided the purchase details (date and bill number), described the specific problem (dirty package and stained saree), and explained the urgency regarding your cousin's wedding. The tone is appropriate for a formal complaint letter. To improve, you could expand slightly on the impact of the stain to further justify the urgency, but overall, the task requirements are fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the purchase details from the problem and the requested solution. You use some cohesive devices like 'Moreover' and 'However' to link ideas. To reach a higher band, ensure that referencing is precise; for example, in the second paragraph, you refer to 'it' when describing the package, which is clear, but ensure that transitions between sentences remain smooth throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Words like 'dissatisfaction', 'replacement', and 'timeframe' are appropriate for a formal letter. There are some minor errors, such as 'it has a very good reviews' (should be 'very good reviews') and 'my cousins marriage' (missing apostrophe). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more precise collocations or slightly more sophisticated descriptors would enhance the quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'I have received it on 21st July' (should be 'I received it on...'), and 'arrange an another piece' (should be 'arrange another piece'). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are minor spacing issues after commas and periods. Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the grammar does not impede communication. Focusing on tense consistency and article usage will help improve your accuracy.
