Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir/Madam

I hope you are doing well and have a great week.

I am writing this letter to your company to inform you about my recent clothing purchase from your online website of your brand which I want to replace with any other clothing item.

Last week I ordered a new trending puffy jacket in dark chocolate colour from your online website which is also a reversable. However, when i received this order and open it but was little disappointed because i got the black colour instead of dark chocolate.

Moreover, in next week I have a plan to go to for my vacations and I really want to wear this jacket over there. I would like to request you to replace this order with my preffered colour as soon as possible. I would be very thankfull to you if you can make it as soon as you can.

warmly

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all three bullet points required in the task. You provided clear details of the purchase, stating that you ordered a 'trending puffy jacket in dark chocolate colour' online last week. You clearly described the problem by explaining that you received a black jacket instead of the dark chocolate one. Furthermore, you explained why you need a replacement urgently by mentioning your upcoming vacation next week and your desire to wear the item on your trip. The tone of the letter is appropriately formal in intent, although there are minor conversational slips in the opening and closing. Overall, all parts of the task are adequately addressed, earning a solid band score.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical overall arrangement and covers the necessary elements in a sequential manner. Paragraphing is used to separate the introduction, the description of the problem, and the urgency of the request. However, cohesive devices are somewhat basic, and the transition between ideas can be slightly abrupt. For example, starting the second body paragraph with 'Moreover, in next week I have a plan to go to for my vacations' functions as a cohesive link, but the phrasing feels mechanical. Additionally, referencing is occasionally repetitive, such as the repeated use of 'online website'. Nevertheless, the progression of ideas is clear throughout, and the reader can easily follow your purpose.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with some attempts at less common lexical items such as 'reversable' (spelled reversibly/reversible) and 'preferred colour'. There are a few spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'reversable' instead of reversible, and slight awkwardness in phrasing like 'from your online website of your brand'. However, these lexical errors do not impede communication, and the meaning remains clear. To achieve a higher band score, you should incorporate a wider range of precise vocabulary and ensure correct spelling for terms related to online shopping and customer service.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms. You successfully attempted complex structures, such as using relative clauses ('which I want to replace') and subordinate clauses ('when i received this order and open it'). However, there are several grammatical errors and punctuation lapses, such as 'open it' instead of 'opened it', missing articles ('in next week', 'in dark chocolate colour'), and preposition misuse ('go to for my vacations'). Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication, and the majority of sentences convey your meaning effectively. Working on subject-verb agreement and article usage will help improve your score in this area.
