Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing to complain about a jacket that I recently purchased from your online store. I ordered a black winter jacket, size medium on 25 september, and my order number is 45281. The jacket was delivered to my home three days later.
Unfortunately, I am not satisfied with the product I received. Although the colour and size are correct, the jacket has a broken zip in the bottom one button is missing. In addition, the material is much thinner that I apperared in the pictures on your website.
I would appreciate it if you could replace the jacket with the a new as soon as possible. I urgently need it because I am travelling to Calgary next week because the weather is unexpected here. I would be greatful if you could arrange the replacement before my daparture.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Your faithfully,
Ritika

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
Your letter successfully covers all parts of the prompt in a well-developed and purposeful manner. You provide clear details of the purchase, including the item description, order number, and specific date, which fully satisfies the first bullet point. Furthermore, you clearly describe the physical problems with the jacket, mentioning the broken zip, the missing button, and the unexpectedly thin material. Finally, you adequately explain why a replacement is needed urgently by mentioning your upcoming trip to Calgary and the weather conditions there. All aspects of the task are handled very well, showing a clear and appropriate tone and purpose throughout the letter, which reflects a high level of task fulfillment.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
Your letter demonstrates a clear overall progression and logical organisation. The response is divided into sensible paragraphs that separate the introduction, the problem description, the urgent request for a replacement, and the closing sign-off. Cohesive devices are generally used effectively to connect your ideas, such as "Although the colour and size are correct" and "In addition". However, referencing and cohesion occasionally feel slightly mechanical, and transitioning between sentences could be smoother in places, such as in the final paragraph where the reasons for the trip are linked together. Overall, the arrangement of information is clear and easy to follow, representing a solid organizational structure.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating your message with appropriate terms such as "online store", "deliver", and "replacement". You also attempt some less common lexical items. However, there are some noticeable vocabulary and word choice errors, such as writing "that I apperared in the pictures" instead of "that appeared", and minor awkward phrasing like "replace the jacket with the a new". Additionally, there is a spelling error with "daparture" instead of "departure". These errors do not impede communication, but they reflect a vocabulary range and control that requires further precision to reach a higher level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
Your letter demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures such as subordinate clauses with "Although" and "because". You show good control over basic grammar and punctuation in many sentences. However, there are some errors in grammar and phrasing, such as the redundant repetition in "travelling to Calgary next week because the weather is unexpected here", as well as a slight slip in the sign-off phrase ("Your faithfully" instead of "Yours faithfully"). While these errors are present, they are not overly frequent and rarely impede the reader's understanding, showing a competent control of grammar that aligns well with the current mark.
