Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
The intent of this correspondence is to bring your attention to this matter. I am not so happy with my recent purchase from your shopping website.
Regarding this matter, I would like to highlight few important observation. I bought a party dress, which is black in colour and A-Line style. I got my order this morning, I've noticed that it was torn near the Axillary area on both sides.
On top of that, that area turned out completely grey in colour, Although the whole dress was black in colour. I really like the style and fitting. Moreover, I ordered this dress for my birthday next week. Unfortunatly, The hole near the underarm is pretty visible and dress is strechy, so any movement can cuase the hole getting bigger.
To resolve this matter satisfactorily, I would like you do some urgent arrangement for replacement. That would be immensely great if do it within 5 days, because I really want to wear it on my birthday party.
I extend my appreciation for your consideration and I anticipate your valued response at your earliest convenience.
Yours Sincerely,
Maitri Bavarva

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
You cover all three requested points clearly. The purchase is identified as a black A-line party dress, the damage is described as a tear under both arms and discolouration, and the birthday next week explains why you need a replacement within five days. Your preference to keep the dress because you like its style and fit also makes the request persuasive. The purpose and desired outcome are clear throughout, and the details are relevant and well developed. To make the response even more complete, specify an order number or purchase date if available, and state what you would like the company to do if a replacement cannot arrive in time. These are minor additions; the letter already addresses the task well.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression: you introduce the complaint, give purchase and damage details, explain the urgency, and request a replacement before closing politely. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and links such as “Moreover” and “To resolve this matter” help guide the reader. Some transitions are more formal or repetitive than necessary, particularly “Regarding this matter” and “On top of that,” and the opening sentence delays the specific purpose. The reference to “that area” is understandable but could be more direct by naming the underarm area again. A more concise opening and slightly more natural transitions would make the cohesion feel more flexible and less formulaic.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “replacement,” “consideration,” and “visible,” and the clothing details are specific enough to communicate the problem. There are also attempts at less common or formal expressions, such as “correspondence” and “immensely,” but some choices sound unnatural in context: “urgent arrangement for replacement” and “valued response” are less idiomatic than direct alternatives. Spelling errors in “Unfortunatly” and “cuase,” along with inconsistent capitalisation of “Axillary,” affect the accuracy of the vocabulary. Aim for precise, natural collocations rather than adding formality; this would build on your adequate range and improve control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the relative clause in “a party dress, which is black in colour and A-Line style” and the reason clause explaining the birthday deadline. The message remains clear, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “I would like to highlight few important observation” needs an article and plural agreement, while “I would like you do some urgent arrangement” is missing “to” and has an awkward noun phrase. The sentence beginning “I got my order this morning, I've noticed” joins two clauses with a comma, and “Although” is incorrectly capitalised after a comma. Review articles, agreement, infinitive patterns, and sentence boundaries; more accurate control of these forms would strengthen the letter.
