Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I am wrting this letter about complaint of clothes, which I ordered recently, due to some problem. I want to replace these clothes with new one.
I purchased a dress form your website as I came to know about the popularity of your brand. I saw the rewiews and ordered your famous artical online. This is 3 piece artical and have beautiful embalishment on it.
Problem is here when I opened it, the duppata had Faint color from different places. Its not looking gorgeous thus it makes me confused about the dress. Although its overall look is nice and fabic also has beneficial quality.
Now I want to replace this dress with another dress which has no defect. I ordered this dress because I want to go on a party after four days. Thus I request you to change this artical with perfect one as soon as possible. I request you to Check the dress before deliver.
I am waiting for your response .
Yours faithfully,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three required points: you identify the online purchase, explain that the dupatta has unevenly faded colour, and request a replacement because you are attending a party in four days. The request to check the replacement before delivery also makes your desired outcome clear. These relevant details meet the task well. However, some information is less fully developed: the purchase details would be clearer with an order date or reference number, and the urgency could be explained more explicitly by stating when you need the replacement to arrive. The opening also says “Dear Sir,” rather than using the requested “Dear Sir or Madam,”. Adding these precise details would make the letter more complete and persuasive.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: you introduce the complaint, describe the defect, and then explain the replacement request and its urgency. Paragraph breaks help distinguish these stages, and linking expressions such as “Although” and “Thus” show how some ideas relate. The progression is generally easy to follow, but cohesion is occasionally mechanical or unclear. For example, “Problem is here when I opened it” is an awkward transition, while “Thus” is used repeatedly to connect the request and the reason for urgency. The reference to “these clothes” before specifying that the purchase is a dress also creates slight uncertainty. Use more natural transitions and make references precise—for example, “When I opened the package, I noticed…”—to improve flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use vocabulary relevant to a customer complaint, including “replace,” “defect,” “reviews,” and “as soon as possible,” so the reader can understand the main issue and requested action. There are also attempts at more descriptive language, such as “beautiful embellishment” and “overall look.” However, spelling errors and inaccurate word choices are noticeable, including “wrting,” “rewiews,” “artical,” “duppata,” and “fabic.” Some phrases are also unnatural or imprecise: “faint color from different places” does not clearly describe the defect, and “beneficial quality” is not an appropriate collocation for fabric. Check spelling carefully and choose precise complaint vocabulary, such as “unevenly faded” or “patchy discoloration,” to express the problem more naturally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrast in “Although its overall look is nice…” and the reason introduced by “because.” The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity and naturalness. Examples include “I want to replace these clothes with new one,” where the singular/plural forms do not agree, and “This is 3 piece artical and have…,” which lacks a clear subject for “have.” Articles and sentence construction also need attention in “Problem is here when I opened it.” Practise building complete clauses and checking agreement, articles, and punctuation. For example: “The dress is a three-piece outfit, and it has attractive embellishments.”
