Student answer (Band 5.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing to request about replacement of jeans which I have bought recently from amazon.com. becuase I am not satisfied with the quality of the jeans.
First of all, I have bought this jeans on last monday and it was delivered yesterday. The colour of jeans is very different from the websites picture. Moreover, I am very disappointed with the quality of the jeans. I have paid one thousand and fifty rupees for that jeans. But the quality is very cheap and it looks like old. I have never expect from your company for quality like this.
I hope you will consider my request and please do replacement of the jeans as soon as possible . I hope this time you will deliver better quality of the jeans. I look forward to hearing from you.
yours sincerely,
Bhumika

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
You identify the purchase as jeans from Amazon and explain two problems: the colour differs from the website image, and the quality seems poor. You also request a replacement, so the main purpose is clear. However, the task is addressed only minimally: you do not explain why the replacement is urgent, and the purchase details are limited to a vague date and price, with no order reference or other identifying information. The letter also contains only 141 words, below the required 150, which further limits how fully you can develop the request. Add a specific reason for needing the jeans urgently and explain the action you expect the company to take and by when.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The information follows a generally sensible order: you state your purpose, describe the purchase and its problems, then make a request and close the letter. Connectors such as “First of all” and “Moreover” help signal the sequence, and the message is understandable overall. However, the paragraphing is limited, and the progression is somewhat mechanical. “I hope” is repeated, while “But” begins a sentence without clearly linking the contrast to the previous point. Separate the purchase details and complaint from your requested solution, and use a wider range of natural links so the reader can follow the urgency and next steps more smoothly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the basic complaint, using relevant terms such as “replacement,” “quality,” “delivered,” and “disappointed.” However, the range is limited and some word choices or collocations sound unnatural, including “request about replacement,” “do replacement,” and “the quality is very cheap.” The spelling error “becuase” is also noticeable. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding the main message, but they reduce precision and naturalness. Use standard complaint-letter phrases such as “request a replacement,” “arrange an exchange,” and “the material feels poor quality.” More precise language would also help distinguish the colour mismatch from the quality problem.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mixture of simple statements and some longer sentences, and the main meaning is generally clear. There are, however, recurring errors in verb forms, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “I have bought this jeans on last monday” should use a past-tense form and correct article and time expression; “I have never expect” also has an incorrect verb form. The opening sentence is awkwardly joined to “because,” and “I hope you will consider my request and please do replacement” combines structures incorrectly. Practise accurate past-tense descriptions and parallel request forms, such as “Please consider my request and arrange a replacement.”
