Some people think that it’s a good idea to socialise with work colleagues during evenings and weekends. Other people think it’s important to keep working life completely separate from social life.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Socializing outside of work with colleagues depends on what a person desires as everyone has their own views on “if we should or should not have a social life with fellow workers outside of work”.

Firstly, having a social life with fellow workers has its own advantages as one should consider the fact that most of us spend majority of our time with fellow workers in the office. So, one of the advantage is having a friend at a place where one is present for 9-10 hours everyday as you get to discuss various kind of problems in your professional and personal life on a day to day basis and as a friend they are in a better position to understand and support you. For instance, recently my fellow coworkers father died and he became all alone and was spending majority of his time working where we as friends supported him during the time when he needed a friend the most.

While on the other hand, we have an argument that supports the fact that working life should be separate from social life which does also have some advantages as well. Let’s consider the fact that as friends and coworkers it is obvious that at some point of time friends will have differences which can be due to opinions or some Rumour which not only renders friendship but also affect the work as well but if you treat everyone at your workplace as a coworker and not as a friend you will have a level of mutual respect even when you have differences of opinion.

According to me, i think that it is very important to maintain friendship with work colleagues outside of work as advantages outweighs disadvantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion in the conclusion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you provide a personal example regarding a coworker's loss, the explanation of the opposing view is relatively brief. To reach a higher band, ensure that each viewpoint is supported by more detailed reasoning or broader examples. The introduction is a bit repetitive, restating the prompt rather than paraphrasing it effectively. Overall, the task is addressed, but the depth of analysis could be improved to fully explore the implications of socialising versus maintaining boundaries.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each view, and a conclusion. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'While on the other hand', and 'For instance' to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel slightly abrupt. Referencing is generally clear, but the use of pronouns could be more precise to avoid ambiguity. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different arguments, which helps the overall structure of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'mutual respect', 'professional', and 'differences of opinion'. However, there are some instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'renders friendship' (which is not a standard collocation) and 'majority of our time' (which should be 'the majority'). To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and topic-specific vocabulary related to workplace dynamics and social interactions. The range is sufficient but lacks the flexibility required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'one of the advantage' (should be 'advantages'), 'coworkers father' (missing possessive apostrophe), and 'advantages outweighs' (subject-verb agreement error). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of commas and apostrophes. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent use of articles would greatly enhance the accuracy of your writing.
