Student answer (Band 7.0)

many people believe that it is nice to be very friendly with work colleagues especially during free times like weekends and evening. Others argue that it is necessary to keep work life absolutely separate from social life. While it is good to socialize with colleagues at work, I strongly believe that personal life should be kept absolutely private.

On the one hand, people who work in a particular company or establishment might possibly never knew each other before. It is a common thing for them to suddenly state socializing and hanging during the weekends and in the evenings. These colleagues could have common interest in life. For instance, they might be supporting the same football club and will always sit out to view matches together.

On the other hand, while staffs of the same company should not be enemies and live an isolated life, in my opinion, there should be a limit to their closeness. Too much familiarity with a colleague at work might initiate suspicion from family members, especially between couples. For example, a man who consistently hangout after work in the evening might necessitate suspicion from the wife which will result to a serious problem at home. also, that might be seen as invading the privacy of the individual. personally, i will advise keeping personal life totally separate from work environment.

In conclusion, although being friends with a work colleague especially you the both of you share common interest and occasionally hangout is not bad, I personally believe that it is more important to keep personal life absolutely separate from cooperate life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the task. You have discussed both views and clearly stated your own opinion in the introduction and conclusion. The ideas are relevant, such as the potential for common interests versus the risk of marital suspicion. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the argument regarding 'suspicion from the wife' is a bit narrow and could have been expanded to discuss broader professional boundaries or the importance of work-life balance more comprehensively. To reach a higher band, ensure that your supporting points are fully explored with more depth and nuance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the use of referencing is occasionally weak. For instance, in the second paragraph, the transition between the idea of common interests and the example of football could be smoother. Additionally, ensure that pronouns and linking words are used more precisely to connect ideas within paragraphs rather than relying on simple sentence-by-sentence progression.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your meaning clearly. You use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'socialize', 'colleagues', and 'privacy'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'cooperate life' (which should be 'corporate life') and 'state socializing' (which should be 'start socializing'). The range is somewhat limited, and you rely on repetitive phrasing. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated synonyms and idiomatic collocations related to professional and social environments to demonstrate a wider range of lexical control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb forms and articles. Examples include 'might possibly never knew' (should be 'might never have known'), 'staffs' (which is an uncountable noun in this context, so 'staff' is correct), and 'result to' (should be 'result in'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some missing capital letters at the start of sentences and after full stops. Increasing your control over complex sentence structures and proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy will significantly improve your score.
