IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people think that it’s a good idea to socialise with work colleagues during evenings and weekends. Other people think it’s important to keep working life completely separate from social life.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Nowadays, Due to the work life imbalance , people are not getting enough time to socialize with each other. However, some mankind believes that, it is a great idea to do get together with the colleagues during the evenings and weekends. On the other side, others think that, It is significant to keep work life separately from the social life. Moreover, I will be discussing both the views in the upcoming paragraphs and give me opinion at the end.

To begin with, being socialized with the friends is a great way to get rid from the hectic schedule. Furthermore, they can spend some time with their friends. For instance, According to the survey held by the government of India , they have stated that,

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay attempts to use cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'For instance', but the lack of content makes it impossible to judge the overall logical progression. The paragraphing is insufficient, as the response ends prematurely before the second viewpoint or the conclusion can be presented. The structure is currently too fragmented to demonstrate a clear flow of ideas. To improve, focus on creating a balanced structure with a clear introduction, two distinct body paragraphs—one for each viewpoint—and a concluding paragraph that summarizes your position.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally limited and contains some awkward phrasing, such as 'some mankind' and 'do get together'. There are also minor errors in word choice, such as 'being socialized with the friends' instead of 'socializing with friends'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey basic meaning, it lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. To improve, try to use more natural collocations and avoid overly simplistic or incorrect phrasing. Expanding your vocabulary related to work-life balance and social interaction will help you express your ideas more effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains several grammatical errors, including punctuation issues (e.g., unnecessary commas after 'that' and 'believe') and awkward sentence structures. The phrase 'get rid from the hectic schedule' is grammatically incorrect; it should be 'get rid of'. There is also a lack of complex sentence structures, which limits the assessment of your grammatical range. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction and punctuation rules. Practice using a variety of complex sentences, such as those using 'although' or 'despite', to demonstrate better control over your writing.
