Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

According to a group, it is a great idea to interact with friends from the workplace during evenings and weekends. In contrast, others believe that it is essential to keep a distance between working life and social life. Here, I will discuss both of the above-mentioned views and give my opinion in further paragraphs.

Let's begin with the former view, that is, it is a good idea to socialize with work colleagues in the evenings and weekends. In other words, in the company, they can only discuss about the particular tasks, however, if they meet outside from the company, they can share their personal lives, and they can get to know each other very well, which is helpful to build relationships. For example, my workplace colleagues and I mostly meet each other on weekends to spend some quality time and explore new places. Another point worth mentioning is that they don't have enough time in an organization to discuss about any problems with the company's tasks. Therefore, if they meet outside in any park or in another place, they can discuss about how to solve that problem in detail.

On the other hand, the latter view implies that it is important to maintain working life completely separate from social life. Firstly, when individuals keep a distance between work life and social life, they can spend more time with their family. They can go on holiday, and it is useful to take a break and relax from their hectic schedules. As a result, they can focus more on their work. Secondly, they can focus more on their child's education and teach them in their weak subjects.

In conclusion, from the points mentioned above, it can be recapitulated that both views have valid reasons. However, I personally believe that people should maintain a distance between their work life and social life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both perspectives and providing a clear personal opinion in the conclusion. The ideas are relevant, such as the benefits of relationship building versus the need for work-life balance. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding discussing work problems outside of the office is a bit repetitive and could have been expanded with more nuanced examples. The position is clear, but the supporting arguments could be more thoroughly explored to reach a higher band. Overall, it is a solid, task-compliant response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In contrast', 'For example', and 'On the other hand', which help the flow of the text. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be more sophisticated. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow throughout the response. The structure is effective for the task requirements.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There is some use of topic-specific vocabulary like 'hectic schedules' and 'workplace colleagues'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a tendency to repeat simple phrases like 'discuss about' (which is also grammatically incorrect, as 'discuss' is transitive). To reach a higher band, the student should aim for more varied and precise collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing. The current level is sufficient for clear communication but lacks the flexibility and precision of higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are recurring grammatical errors. For example, the phrase 'discuss about' is used multiple times; 'discuss' should be followed directly by the object. There are also minor issues with preposition usage, such as 'meet outside from the company' instead of 'meet outside the company'. Despite these errors, the grammar does not impede communication. The student demonstrates a reasonable command of sentence structure, but more attention to verb-preposition collocations and error-free complex sentences is needed.
