Student answer (Band 8.0)

People hold different opinions about whether employees should spend their free time with colleagues. While some believe that building friendships outside the workplace strengthens professional relationships, others argue that work and personal life should remain completely separate. This essay will discuss both perspectives before explaining why I believe maintaining a reasonable balance is the most beneficial approach.

On the one hand, socialising with colleagues beyond office hours can create a more positive and cooperative working environment. Spending time together in informal settings allows employees to understand one another's personalities, interests, and communication styles. As a result, trust develops more naturally, making teamwork smoother and reducing misunderstandings. Furthermore, strong interpersonal relationships often increase job satisfaction because people enjoy working with individuals they know well. For example, many companies organise dinners or weekend activities where employees can interact without the pressure of work, leading to stronger collaboration during office hours.

On the other hand, separating professional and personal life offers several important advantages. Every individual needs time to relax, pursue hobbies, and strengthen relationships with family and close friends. If employees regularly socialise with colleagues after work, they may struggle to disconnect from job-related conversations and responsibilities. In addition, spending excessive time with the same group of people may limit opportunities to build friendships outside the workplace. Maintaining clear boundaries can therefore reduce stress and contribute to a healthier work-life balance.

In my opinion, neither extreme is ideal. Developing friendly relationships with colleagues is valuable because it promotes mutual support and effective communication. However, employees should also protect their personal time and avoid allowing work to dominate their social lives. Occasional gatherings can strengthen workplace relationships without interfering with individual well-being or family commitments.

In conclusion, although socialising with colleagues can improve teamwork and create a more enjoyable workplace, keeping sufficient distance between professional and private life is equally important. A balanced approach enables people to enjoy the benefits of both strong workplace relationships and a fulfilling personal life.

The ideas are well-developed, with logical arguments provided for each side. For instance, you explain how socialising fosters trust and teamwork, while also noting how boundaries prevent burnout and protect personal time. The response is balanced and demonstrates a strong understanding of the prompt requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The essay is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth. You make effective use of cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand,' 'Furthermore,' 'In addition,' and 'In conclusion,' which help guide the reader through your argument. The paragraphing is logical and appropriate for the structure of an IELTS essay. The referencing is clear, and the flow of information is natural, making the text easy to follow from start to finish.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for the academic context. Phrases such as 'cooperative working environment,' 'disconnect from job-related conversations,' and 'fostering mutual support' show a level of precision and flexibility. The vocabulary is used naturally and accurately throughout the text. While the range is sufficient and effective, incorporating a few more sophisticated or idiomatic collocations could elevate the response further. However, the current level is precise and contributes to a clear, professional tone that is well-suited to the task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

The essay displays a wide range of grammatical structures, including complex sentences and varied clause types. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and syntax is excellent. There are no significant grammatical errors that impede communication. You successfully use a mix of simple and complex structures to convey your ideas clearly. The grammatical accuracy is high, and the control over tense and agreement is consistent throughout the piece, reflecting a strong command of English grammar.
