Student answer (Band 6.0)

Socialising with colleagues can impact one's social life positively or negatively. While some people are of the opinion that socialising with colleagues during evenings and weekends is a good thing. This is as it would strengthen working relationships and also add productivity. Going out together makes working environments more relaxing and bearable and it helps reduce tensions between colleagues. This is because by doing activities it strengthen working relationships as you get to know each other better.

Moreover keeping worklife separate from social life can be impactful when it comes to privacy as it helps one keep some certain aspects of their lives private. This will lead to reduction of disrespect as some colleagues may feel obligated to comment about your life.Keeping it separate helps create boundaries that helps one navigate both workspace and social space

In my opinion, keeping your worklife separate from social life is necessary as it reduces conflicts that arise from entitlement. For example I tried mixing both lives and my colleagues kept borrowing money from my friends. They even went as far as even showing up at my house without proper notice. This also impacted my social life as I began having conflicts with my boyfriend with whom we were living together.

In conclusion, while it is okay to have social activities with colleagues it is also okay not to have them as both of them have different impacts to ones life. Doing it in moderation where some weekends you socialise but also maintain privacy and also your own time is okay.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the benefits of team bonding versus the need for privacy. However, the development is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding productivity is mentioned but not fully explained. The personal example provided is clear and supports the position well. To reach a higher band, you should aim to expand on your points with more depth and nuance rather than listing them briefly. The conclusion provides a balanced summary, which is a positive feature of your response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Moreover' and 'In conclusion', to link ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or repetitive. For example, the transition between the first and second sentences in the introduction is fragmented, as the second sentence is a sentence fragment. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as the use of 'this' to refer to broad concepts. Improving the flow between sentences by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring each sentence is complete would enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'productivity', 'obligated', and 'entitlement' appropriately. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'add productivity' instead of 'increase productivity' or 'doing activities' which is quite vague. You attempt to use less common vocabulary, which is good, but the overall range is somewhat limited. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing. Expanding your vocabulary to include more academic or formal synonyms will help you achieve a higher score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'This is as it would strengthen' is awkward, and there are punctuation issues, such as missing spaces after commas (e.g., 'Moreover keeping'). There are also subject-verb agreement errors, such as 'boundaries that helps' instead of 'boundaries that help'. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and punctuation will significantly improve your accuracy.
