Student answer (Band 6.5)

In this generation, some individuals think socialising with work colleagues during weekends is a good idea while others argue it's essential to keep personal and work life separate. In this essay, I will discuss both these views and share my personal opinion.

On the one hand, mixing personal and work life can create stronger bond. To further elaborate, having a causal gathering on weekly off days can create a healthy connection with peers. For instance, inviting your work mates to your house in evenings for BBQ party will give them a sense of gratitude and make the feel more comfortable around you at work. In addition, at times they mind help your out at work as well when you need any help.

On the other hand, this opens a door for people who do not understand personal space and they get too close and start involving themselves in your family matters. In other words, people start givings advices and opinions on how to run your household matters. For example, work peers coming more often to your house eventually start givings you parental advices and share their own experiences. Furthermore, they expect your to take their advice and abide by it.

In conclusion, having your work friends over at your home for a get together once in a while is not a bad idea but your peers should understand their limitations and control their habits of sharing experiences. In my opinion, we can have people from work come to our house on some evenings but in a controllable matter; this can benefit your in your workplace as well as to get to know them better.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both perspectives and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the benefits of bonding versus the potential for boundary violations. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding 'gratitude' and 'comfort' is a good start but could be expanded with more nuanced analysis of professional dynamics. The conclusion is clear, though it repeats some points rather than synthesising them. Overall, the response is well-focused, but the depth of argumentation remains at a functional level rather than a fully extended one.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organised into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. The use of cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'In addition', and 'In conclusion' helps guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing and flow. For example, the phrase 'this opens a door for people' is a bit informal and could be better linked to the previous paragraph. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the progression of ideas is generally easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common collocations, such as 'personal space' and 'work colleagues'. However, there are several instances of awkward phrasing and word choice errors, such as 'causal gathering' (likely meant 'casual'), 'mind help your out' (a combination of typos and grammatical errors), and 'controllable matter' (should be 'controlled manner'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise word choice and better attention to spelling and collocation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the writer attempts complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and pronoun usage (e.g., 'make the feel more comfortable', 'they mind help your out', 'start givings you parental advices'). The word 'advices' is an uncountable noun and should be 'advice'. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the response. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to demonstrate more consistent control over basic grammatical rules and reduce the frequency of slips in complex structures.
