Student answer (Band 6.0)

it is often argued that it is good idea to socialize with work colleagues during evening and weekends, while others believe that work and social life should be kept completely separate. This essay will discuss both views before giving my opinion.

On the one hand, spending time with colleagues has many benefits. People can share their work experience during work if they have good bonding with each other. By sharing their working thoughts ,discussing their opinion they can learn more than others. As a result, they can improve their communication and work better as a team. Also, good relationship build trust and friendly environment. If colleagues are not being socialize they might later feel more isolated or corner during work hours which may lead them to become less productive and active. By socializing they can learn more and as a result they can improve their career prospects.

On the other hand, keeping work and personal life separate allows people to switch off , reduce stress, and recharge for the next day. For example, people can spend time with their family or pursue their hobbies, which helps them to maintain a healthy work-life balance. However, too much distance from colleagues might limit networking and support at work.

In my view, a balanced life work better and best, interact with colleagues enough to build trust, but protect personal life on weekends.

In conclusion, it is often argued that socialize with colleagues at work is beneficial, while others believe that personal life should remain separate.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding 'bonding' and 'career prospects' is repetitive, and the explanation of why socialising leads to better teamwork could be more deeply explored with specific examples. The conclusion is also quite brief and merely restates the prompt rather than summarising the main points effectively. To reach a higher band, you should aim to expand on your supporting points with more detailed reasoning or illustrative examples.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. You use some cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' to signal the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical, and there are instances where the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition between the benefits of socialising and the potential for isolation is slightly abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words would enhance the overall flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your meaning clearly. You use some relevant topic-specific terms like 'career prospects', 'work-life balance', and 'networking'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'good bonding' (better: 'strong rapport') and 'not being socialize' (should be: 'not socialising'). The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, and you rely on basic phrasing in several places. Incorporating more precise academic collocations would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb forms and articles (e.g., 'it is good idea', 'socialize with colleagues', 'work better and best'). Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'If colleagues are not being socialize they might later feel more isolated or corner'. These errors do not significantly impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage will improve your accuracy.
