Some people think that it’s a good idea to socialise with work colleagues during evenings and weekends. Other people think it’s important to keep working life completely separate from social life.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In today's fast-paced world, an importance of socialization is getting lower due to hectic schedule of workers. A number of individuals claim that it is a good idea to socialise with co-workers in evening time and holidays. However, opponents argue that it is essential to separate working routine from social life. Even though both views have their significant pros and cons, I support the later notion. Both these views along with its explanation are discussed in the following paragraphs.

There are several valid arguments that support the former view. The principal one is, stronger relationship bond with colleagues. This is because if peers spend spare time with each others, they are more likely to attach emotionally and share their personal bonding with each others. It leads to a friendly and pleasurable working environment at the workplace. Moreover, it is also essential to finish work related tasks effectively. This is because the productivity and efficiency would increase with peaceful and relaxed mind that comes from friendly surroundings at a company. For example, amiable colleagues with stronger bonding would take care of each other's projects and eager to help each others to finish their work quickly compared to strangers which eventually affects their efficiency and productivity.

On the other hand, there are also a few benefits of keeping social and work like separate. The first and foremost one is, less work-related discussion leads to lower work stress. To elaborate it, most of the time employees do gossips about an employer and an office environment whenever they meet. Because of this scenario, individuals would not get a break from a working environment and get stressed. In addition, if individuals prefer to keep working and social life different, they get more chance to make new friends by socialising with people around. The last but not least, people get frustrated from same boring life. This is because they will see same individuals here and there and it can be frustrating sometimes and boring at the same time.

In conclusion, although many people believe that it is good to socialise with your colleagues on holidays because it helps to make your emotional bond stronger and increase productivity and efficiency at workplace, I think it is even more better to keep both work and social life separate as it is not only necessary to lower work stress but also to get a chance to make new friends and interesting life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, particularly the arguments regarding workplace productivity and the psychological benefits of separation. However, the development is occasionally repetitive, such as the focus on 'efficiency and productivity' in both the second and fourth paragraphs. While the position is clear throughout, the supporting examples could be more specific to move beyond general statements. Overall, the response meets the requirements of the task well, though it lacks the depth of analysis required for a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two viewpoints. Cohesive devices such as 'The principal one is', 'Moreover', and 'On the other hand' are used to guide the reader. However, there is some mechanical use of these devices, and referencing is occasionally imprecise (e.g., 'the later notion' should be 'the latter'). The flow between ideas is generally smooth, but some transitions feel slightly formulaic. The progression of ideas is clear, but the essay would benefit from more varied cohesive links to avoid a repetitive structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to convey their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use less common items like 'amiable', 'hectic', and 'notion'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'an importance of socialization is getting lower', 'do gossips', and 'it is even more better'. These errors do not impede communication, but they demonstrate a lack of precision. To improve, the student should focus on collocations and the correct usage of articles and comparative structures.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While complex sentences are attempted, they often contain grammatical errors, such as 'if peers spend spare time with each others, they are more likely to attach emotionally'. There are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement, article usage, and pluralization (e.g., 'the later notion', 'same boring life', 'do gossips'). While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede the reader's understanding of the main points. A greater focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and refining complex sentence construction would significantly improve the score.
