Student answer (Band 6.5)

A large number of individuals believe that engaging with their work partners in the free time such as after the office hours is great but others think we should keep our social and work life separate. In my opinion, I think there is no issue in socializing with the colleagues. My essay aims at discussing both viewpoints and reasons behind my choice.

On the one hand, the most prominent point is that getting along with our work team can help us to understand one another in the best possible way which will not only result in helping each other more but also the productivity will be increased which is a win win situation. Moreover, if we know the people personally who we work with daily then there is a great livelihood of our work life to be more enjoyable as well as considerably less stressful in the end of the day.

On the other hand, People think that mixing up personal and professional life can result in totally unacceptable situations. To elaborate it, sometimes work buddies get involved in each other's life totally which leads them to know everything about one another. In future, if they disagree with each other at any point in the personal life and they are no longer friends it can be a matter of concern because it can create trouble for them to work together anymore.

In conclusion, although it is essential to balance work and social life but I believe that we should get along with the people we work with in our free times so workalife can be made less toxic and enjoyable.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both viewpoints and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the benefits of team cohesion versus the risks of blurred professional boundaries. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding the 'unacceptable situations' could be more thoroughly supported with specific examples or deeper analysis. The position is consistent throughout, but the essay would benefit from more nuanced exploration of the topic to reach a higher band. Overall, it is a solid response that fulfills the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the one hand,' 'Moreover,' and 'In conclusion,' which help guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing and flow, such as the phrasing 'To elaborate it' and 'in the end of the day.' Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two viewpoints. The progression of ideas is generally clear, though the connection between sentences could be smoother in some areas to improve the overall flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common collocations, such as 'win win situation' and 'less toxic,' though some word choices are slightly imprecise or unnatural, such as 'great livelihood' (likely meant 'likelihood') and 'workalife.' The range is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, but there is a lack of sophisticated or precise vocabulary that would elevate the response to a higher band. Spelling is generally accurate, and the errors present do not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'in the free time' (should be 'in their free time'), 'the productivity will be increased' (passive voice is slightly awkward here), and 'work together anymore' (should be 'work together effectively'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some missing commas that would improve readability. The majority of sentences are understandable, but the frequency of minor errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. A greater variety of error-free complex structures is needed.
