Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Socializing with colleagues is very common these days. Many people believe it makes your bond stronger with your teammates, whereas some oppose it and think both personal and professional life should be separate. In this essay, I will discuss both the views and I will share my view in favor of the latter proposition.

To begin with, hanging out with work mates sometimes forget the boundaries and discuss things that are too personal. While partying people often consume alchol and as a result they get intoxicated and discuss things that can hamper their job. For example, many times people start discussing their job and started gossiping about the boss, which in result sometime backfire.

On the other hand, some people feel it creates a healthy atmosphere between colleagues.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, as it is only 128 words long. Consequently, the task is not fully addressed. While you introduce both views and state your position, the development of ideas is extremely limited. The second body paragraph is only one sentence long, failing to provide the necessary support, examples, or depth required for a discussion essay. To improve, you must expand each body paragraph with detailed explanations and relevant examples to ensure all parts of the prompt are fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organized into paragraphs, and there is a basic attempt at logical progression. You use some cohesive devices such as 'To begin with' and 'On the other hand' to signal shifts in the argument. However, because the response is so short, the overall structure is underdeveloped. The transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs is clear, but the lack of content prevents the development of a cohesive argument. To improve, ensure each paragraph contains a topic sentence followed by supporting points and a concluding thought.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is generally appropriate for the topic, such as 'professional life', 'healthy atmosphere', and 'intoxicated'. However, the range is quite limited due to the brevity of the text. There are also some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'alchol' (alcohol) and 'sometime backfire' (sometimes backfire). To reach a higher band, you should aim to incorporate a wider variety of topic-specific vocabulary and ensure accurate spelling and collocation throughout your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that affect the flow, such as 'hanging out with work mates sometimes forget the boundaries' (the subject 'hanging out' does not match the verb 'forget') and 'in result sometime backfire' (which should be 'as a result, it sometimes backfires'). While the meaning is generally clear, these errors demonstrate a lack of control over complex structures. Focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent verb tense usage to improve your accuracy.
