Student answer (Band 6.0)

In today's world, some people believe that outing with work colleagues during evenings and weekends is a pleasant idea. While others think that it is important to keep working life completely separate from social life. I am more positive about that too. I will discuss both views and give my opinion.

There are a few reasons why people think that it is worthwhile to hang out with work colleagues during the evening and weekends. The most important reason is personal growth. People think that if they have a better bond with colleagues can ramp up their career progression. They are likely to get a promotion earlier than the introvert colleague. However, I do not believe in this philosophy, as employees get promotions or career growth according to their skill set, not socialization.

On the contrary, People think that it's keep noting to consider work-life balance without putting more emphasis on work colleagues. People cannot neglect the importance of their family members and friends outside of work time. Support from family members is equally important for an individual to be successful in their life. If people spend their time outside of work with colleagues, they may end up dissatisfied with their family members.

In my opinion, people should maintain their social life and their office life equally to maintain work-life balance. It is extremely important to separate both lives.

To recapitulate, it is good to go out with work colleagues in the evening or on weekends. However, it should be occasional, not on a regular basis, in order to maintain balance in both lives.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views and providing a personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding career progression is introduced but not fully explored with specific examples or deeper reasoning. The opinion is stated clearly, but the justification for why it should be 'occasional' is brief. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your points with more detailed explanations or concrete examples. The conclusion is a bit contradictory to the body paragraphs, as it introduces a nuance (occasional socialising) that was not previously discussed, which slightly weakens the overall coherence of your position.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. You use some cohesive devices such as 'However', 'On the contrary', and 'To recapitulate' to link your thoughts. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly misused, such as 'On the contrary, People think that it's keep noting to consider...', which is grammatically confusing and disrupts the flow. Additionally, the transition between the body paragraphs and the final opinion could be smoother. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring they are used naturally would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your meaning clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'career progression', 'work-life balance', and 'dissatisfied'. However, there are instances of awkward phrasing and incorrect word choice, such as 'outing with work colleagues' (should be 'going out') and 'it's keep noting to consider' (which is unclear). The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, relying on fairly common expressions. To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations and avoid informal phrasing like 'hang out' in favour of more formal alternatives.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'I am more positive about that too' (which is vague), 'the introvert colleague' (should be plural or generic), and 'it's keep noting'. Punctuation is generally fine, but there are issues with sentence construction and subject-verb agreement. To achieve a higher band, focus on increasing the accuracy of your complex sentences and ensuring that your verb forms and word order are consistently correct. Reducing these minor errors will significantly improve the readability of your writing.
