IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people think that it’s a good idea to socialise with work colleagues during evenings and weekends. Other people think it’s important to keep working life completely separate from social life.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Nowadays, numerous people like to meet their colleagues after the office hours too and be more socialise but others give more preference to keep their worklife and personal life separate. The subsequent paragraphs will explore the reasons of both mindsets before providing my prespective on this thought.

On the one hand side, people are becoming busy as the time is passing. So they do not have enough time to go out to find new friends, that's why they try to take their co-workers as their close friends and like to go out with them where they can share their personal and official challanges without any hesitation. Further more, they can have a chance to maintain their comfort as like home while working.

The student uses a limited vocabulary with noticeable errors and unnatural collocations that occasionally impede smooth reading. Examples include 'socialise' used as an adjective ('be more socialise'), 'worklife' written as one word, and 'official challanges' instead of 'professional challenges' or 'work-related challenges'. Phrases like 'busy as the time is passing' are somewhat awkward. While there is a basic attempt to convey ideas, the range of vocabulary is restricted and contains frequent word choice and word formation inaccuracies, fitting the Band 5 descriptor.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the multi-clause sentence starting with 'On the one hand side...'. However, grammatical control is weak. There are noticeable errors such as 'numerous people like... and be more socialise', incorrect prepositions ('reasons of both mindsets' instead of 'reasons for'), and punctuation/spelling slips ('Further more', 'prespective'). The control over complex structures is faulty, and frequent errors persist, which is characteristic of a Band 5 performance.
