IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people think that it’s a good idea to socialise with work colleagues during evenings and weekends. Other people think it’s important to keep working life completely separate from social life.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In this contemporary world, most of the people believe that it is a wise choice to hangout with workmates during free time and in the weekends. Nevertheless, others disagree and think that it is vital to keep work life and social life seperately.

Many employees think that socialising with colleagues will help to improve the chemistry between them. This results in knowing each other better and forms a great bond between them.

This creates a new friendship in the workplace which is seen to relieve work stress and pressures among employees. This encourages better work completion and ensures smooth relationship among the staff in the company.

It is seen as a good practice where group of colleagues working in the same company usually goes for a short weekend trip where they get to know each other better. Travelling in a van ensures better chemistry and a good experience. It is essential to have frequent trips with work colleagues to have a better understanding of each other. For instance, whenever an employee faces an issue from the management, all the colleagues working would help by standing together. This will prove the unity of staff working in the company.

However, rest of the general public believe that it is important to maintain the working life and the social life on different platforms. The main reason is that they believe that sharing too much of personal details will bring unnecessary judgements arcross the office. People tend to talk behind of another person which is very common in the corporate world of India.

Subsequntly, sharing one's family backgrounds will give rise to unwanted office politics.

And, people believe that weekends should be reserved for personal and family time rather than socialising with work colleagues.

In my perspective, I agree that socialising with workmates is a good choice if it is in acceptable limits. One should know what to share and what not to. No office staffs should have more knowledge of your personal details without your consent.
