Student answer (Band 6.0)

A large number of people claim that it is better to keep personal and professional life distinct, while others believe that it is acceptable to socialise with work colleagues. This essay will discuss both views. I believe that the two should be kept separate, as colleagues do not always have sincere intentions.

Socializing with work colleague can also be beneficial especially when a person accepts a job in a new city. Such people may not know anyone except their colleagues, or even if they do, they might live far from their own community. In this situation, having colleagues beside can ease loneliness and provide emotional support. Therefore, spending time with colleagues can also be reasonable in some cases. For example, people might move from banglore to pune insearch of job eventually their work colleagues will become their family.

On the other hand, socialising with work colleagues is not always a positive experience. In the corporate world, some people choose their friends based on status or talent. They think that a particular person may be useful to them in the future. Therefore, they do not genuinely like that person, but they maintain the friendship in the expectation of getting something in return.

In conclusion, many people believe that it is not a wise decision to socialise with work colleagues, whereas others believe that it is mandatory to socialise with work colleagues. This essay discussed both views and stated my opinion that keeping work life and personal life seperate is a good idea as people may not have genuine motives.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your essay addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—keeping work and social life separate versus socialising with colleagues—and you present a clear personal position stating that the two should be kept apart. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. For instance, your paragraph on the benefits of socialising for newcomers includes a relevant real-world example about moving from Bangalore to Pune, but the discussion on insincere motives in the corporate world remains somewhat general and could be extended further with more specific elaboration. To reach a higher level, you need to ensure that all main ideas are equally well-developed and supported with deeper analysis throughout the body paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

Your essay has a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, satisfying the main requirements of logical organisation. You use basic cohesive devices to connect your thoughts, such as 'On the other hand' and 'In conclusion'. Nevertheless, cohesion is sometimes a bit mechanical, and referencing can occasionally feel repetitive or disjointed, as seen in the repeated phrasing used to introduce your concluding remarks. To improve further, you should aim to use a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices and ensure that referencing within and between sentences flows more naturally without relying on formulaic transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'distinct', 'corporate world', and 'emotional support'. You make some attempts to use less common vocabulary, though this is occasionally accompanied by minor inaccuracies or spelling slips, such as 'Socializing with work colleague' (missing a plural on colleagues) and 'seperate' (a spelling error). Additionally, some word choices are slightly unnatural, like 'insearch of job'. These errors do not impede communication, but to achieve a higher score, you need to display greater precision in word choice, correct spelling, and more natural collocations when attempting more sophisticated language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

Your writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating your ability to construct compound and subordinate clauses, such as in the sentence 'This essay will discuss both views. I believe that the two should be kept separate, as colleagues do not always have sincere intentions.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing capitalisation in proper nouns like 'banglore' and 'pune', spacing errors around punctuation like 'future. Therefore', and occasional article omissions. However, these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear throughout. To move up, you should strive for greater accuracy in punctuation, capitalisation, and complex sentence structures, ensuring that error-free sentences become more frequent.
