Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task partially, as it touches upon both views and provides a personal opinion, but the ideas remain limited and under-developed. For instance, the arguments regarding making working life easier or avoiding future consequences are stated simply without adequate explanation or specific examples. Furthermore, the response falls short of the minimum length requirement, containing only 211 words instead of the required 250, which restricts the depth of the discussion. To achieve a higher band, the writer must extend and support their ideas fully with relevant examples and ensure the length requirement is completely met.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay displays some overall organisation with a clear attempt at paragraphing, separating the introduction, two body paragraphs, and the conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'On the contrary' are used to structure the text, though referencing and transitions can be mechanical or repetitive at times. For example, the sequence of listing points relies heavily on basic transition words. To progress further, the writer should ensure that ideas flow more naturally across paragraphs and that referencing between sentences is managed with greater flexibility and precision.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate for the task. The writer attempts some less common expressions like 'comfort space' and 'future consequences', but there are noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling, such as 'seperate', 'socialise' used as a noun, 'pendown', 'introvert' instead of 'introverted', and 'cones' instead of 'cons'. These lexical inaccuracies and spelling mistakes cause some difficulty for the reader. To improve, the student needs to expand their range of vocabulary, ensure correct word forms, and carefully proofread their spelling and collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a limited range of sentence structures, relying primarily on simple sentences and basic complex forms that frequently contain errors. There are frequent issues with punctuation, capitalization (such as mid-sentence capitalization in 'Firstly, It may help'), articles, and subject-verb agreement, as seen in 'Both thoughts has their own pros and cones, thereofre'. Attempts at complex structures often result in faulty grammar, which causes strain for the reader. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to increase their control over complex grammatical patterns, improve punctuation, and reduce basic sentence errors.
